Personal Reflections / Learnings Following COP

After watching as well as keeping up with the closing of COP28 and doing more research on the past UN Climate Change conferences through reading different articles, I came to find out that the agreement to begin reducing global consumption of fossil fuels which in turn signals the end of the oil age, was a controversial topic within itself as it was called "historic" by Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber. To be completely honest, I found it to be a little ironic that the topic of finally reducing the global consumption of fossil fuels all came into agreement in Dubai; apart of a nation who has built their massive wealth off of the abundance of their natural resources of petroleum/oil.

As a marketing major and a student this semester of a coursed called, Marketing For The Greater Good. In this class, we discussed and did projects on social issues that we as a society need to tackle (e.g. binge drinking, drug addiction, suicide rates, poverty, discrimination, climate change, inadequate healthcare infrastructure) so it wasn't not known or necessarily a surprise that this behavior change for more sustainable methods was coming. We are currently living in an age where consumer preferences, values, & beliefs towards or about the brands they’re purchasing matters more than ever. With that being observed -- fossil fuels being a major contributor air pollution, water pollution, and climate change doesn't align with consumer behavior changes. The process behind making a product and how it ends up on the shelf matters now too. In addition to that, there have been talks within the last couple of years since the growth of electric powered vehicles of what the fossil fuel industry would look like if the world took on a more sustainable perspective and way of thinking when it comes to the way we do things.

I gained a deeper insight into how climate change isn't only important on a global scale or when it becomes a tipping point before no return but that the small things that lead up to climate change such as the things going on within our local community matter too such as the factory or industrial plant down the street, that we may or may not know about matters too and is a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Not only did I gain deeper insights but I also holistically became more knowledgeable on the value and effects of my choices when it comes to the ripple effects of where my money goes based on the products I buy which are made across the world in sometimes less developed communities.
