While Anne Boleyn is arguably the most famous of Henry VIII’s wives, he did order her head chopped off with a big axe, and this event slightly overshadows any romance their relationship may have entailed. Catherine Parr takes the top spot over the mad-for-divorcing king for the simple fact that, unlike pretty much all of her predecessors, she got off scot free. Plus, she gets bonus points for outliving three successive husbands. Three!

She and her husband were physicists and chemists. She and her husband discovered the elements of polonium and radium, as they were pioneers in radiological research and together they won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. Their remains are together to the Pantheon (Cemetery of the Great) in Paris in honor of their scientific achievements, and their remains are placed side by side in a single crypt in the cemetery.

Before he bestowed his name upon the popular piercing, Prince Albert was married to Queen Victoria for 21 years. After centuries of royals running amok, having affairs and being generally unpresentable, Queen Victoria was the monarch to bring some respectability back to Buckingham Palace. Together, Victoria and Albert projected an image of happy coupledom that the public could aspire to, and the royals became well respected and loved once more. When Albert passed away, Queen Victoria embraced her inner goth and wore black for the next 40 years.

Long before they would alter history as the leaders the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr and Coretta Scott King met on their university campus. Dr King fondly recalled their first ever conversation as “about the question of racial and economic injustice and the question of peace. After an hour, my mind was made up.”

Apparently not one for taking it slow, Dr King told Coretta in their first conversation that he wanted to marry her. As most people might do when proposed to by a stranger, Coretta gently rebuked Dr King, saying she hardly knew him. However, the two would tie the knot a year later.

Toklas was Stein’s lifelong muse, and on nights when she would stay up late writing, she would leave love notes for Toklas on her pillow. After many years of being generally ignored by critics and publishers (despite her knack for guiding other writers to fame) with the 1933 publication of her book ‘The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas’, the lovers became famous.

Carl and Gerty Cori spent more than 20 years exploring how body metabolized glucose. Claude Bernard had discovered glycogen in muscles and liver long ago. Although insulin effect on blood sugar was known in 1921, biochemical mechanism of carbohydrate metabolism was not understood. Research was so far done on whole animal, which yielded very little knowledge. Early breakthrough arrived when Carl thought of the potential of tissue preparation and worked with minced frog muscles. They isolated an unknown intermediate compound called glucose 1-phosphate, now called Cori's ester. They also established the compound's structure and identified the enzyme phosphorylase that catalyzed its chemical formation, and showed that Cori ester is the first step in the conversion of glycogen into glucose. They further showed that it was also the last step in the conversion of glucose to glycogen as it was a reversible step. This involved very little energy and maintained the balance between glycogen and glucose. This biochemical cycle is known as Cori's cycle.

In this brilliant collaboration, Carl and Gerty studied how the body metabolizes glucose and advanced the understanding of production and storing of energy. The findings were particularly useful in the development of diabetic treatment. In 1947, the Coris received the Nobel Prize "for their discovery of the course of the catalytic conversion of glycogen". They shared the prize with Bernardo Houssay of Argentina who recognized the role of anterior pituitary in glucose metabolism.

Gerty also studied glycogen storage disease, identifying at least four forms, each related to a particular enzyme defect. She died of myelofibrosis in 1957.

Although she faced prejudice for being a woman during her times, today Gerty is more celebrated of the Coris as she is a third women after Marie and Irene Curie and first American woman-to win Nobel Prize.

He said that Ali, may God bless him, stayed with his wife, Mrs. Fatima, may God be pleased with her, and her children Al-Hassan, Al-Hussein, and Al-Harith for three days, during which they did not taste the food.  And Mrs. Fatima had a scarf (shawl), so she gave it to me to sell it and buy food for its price.  So our master Ali took it.  He sold it for six dirhams.  And when Ali was going to buy food, some poor met him, so he was in pain for their condition, and gave them the six dirhams he had, which is the price of the Mazar (the shawl)that he sold, and while on his way to his home, Gabriel, peace be upon him, met him in the form of a human being with a camel from heaven, so he said:  Aba El Hassan bought this camel from me.  Ali said to him: I do not have its price, and I cannot buy it.  The seller said: You can buy it, and pay for it later.  Ali asked him:How much do you sell it?  The seller said: With a hundred dirhams, he was charged on me, and before buying it from him, he paid the deferred price and took it, and Dahab.  So Mikael Ali met him with a picture of an Arab man and asked him: Do you sell this camel, Abu Al Hussein?  Ali said: Yes, do I sell it?  He said:How much did you buy it? He replied: I bought it for a hundred dirhams.  Mikael said: I accept to buy it from you for a hundred and sixty dirhams, so your profit will be sixty dirhams.  Ali sold it to him for that price, and the buyer paid him one hundred and sixty dirhams.  Ali took it, and he walked to his house, and he met him on the road, the first seller, who is Gabriel, and asked him if he sold the camel, Aba Al-Hassan?  Ali replied: Yes, I sold it.  Gabriel said: Give me my right.  He paid him a hundred dirhams and left sixty dirhams with him.  So he took it to his house, and placed it in the hands of Fatima, may God be pleased with her.  I asked him where did you get this money!  He replied to me in the charity of six dirhams for the people of the poor, so God gave me sixty dirhams, so every one dirham profit was ten dirhams.

Queen Victoria was born on May 24, 1819. She was the daughter of Prince Edward. Both her father and grandfather died in 1820. Victoria married her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha on February 10, 1840. Victoria bore nine children within the next seventeen years, among them the future King Edward VII. Albert was an avid patron of the arts, sciences, and burgeoning industries, and he helped organize the famous Great Exhibition of 1851 at the "Crystal Palace." Victoria doted on her husband, who influenced her greatly and became her most trusted adviser in matters of state. The other major influence early in her reign was her first Prime Minister William Lamb, second Viscount Melbourne, of the liberal Whig party. These early years of Victorian rule saw major reforms in British education, with the Grammar Schools Act of 1840 and the founding of Queen's College for women in London in 1848. When Prince Albert died in 1861, the queen was devastated and went into deep mourning. She rarely appeared in public until the end of the 1860s, and during this time Great Britain saw a major movement in favor of republican government and for the abolition of monarchic powers. However, with the help of the Conservative party's Benjamin Disraeli, prime minister in 1868 and again from 1874 to 1880, the queen eventually reassumed a more public and influential role in the government. He became an important political advisor and accompanying the Queen, replacing Lord Melbourne who was completely in control. He helped the queen during her pregnancy.

Isabella was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 2, 1921, the daughter of immigrants from Poland. She attended the local public schools, while at school, a female chemistry teacher led her to her pursuit of the field as a career. She attended the University of Michigan on full scholarship, where she majored in physical chemistry and received a Bachelor of Science at age 19, followed by Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in the field. During her graduate work.

Karle was born in New York City, on June 18, 1918, the son of Sadie Helen (Kun) and Louis Karfunkle.He was born into a Jewish family with a strong interest in the arts.

He started college at the age of 15 and received his bachelor's degree from the City College of New York in 1937, where he took additional courses in biology, chemistry, and math in addition to the required curriculum there. He earned a master's degree from Harvard University in 1938, having majored in biology.

In 1940 and students in the physical chemistry lab at the University of Michigan were being paired off with their lab partners for the semester. Partners were assigned by the last name. LUGOSKI, ISABELLA — a Detroit native, daughter of Polish immigrants, and gifted physical chemistry student in her final undergraduate year — was seated next to KARLE, JEROME, a precocious first-year physical chemistry Ph.D. candidate with a master's in biology from Harvard.

The first day Isabella comes in to set up my experiments in the laboratory, and here's this fellow who's already all set up and ready to go. Whoever heard of coming in early during your lunch hour to set up? That annoyed her a bit. She was always top in any of the classes. And He was the first competition She had.

As the two highest-performing students in the physical chemistry lab, Isabella and Jerome regularly tried to beat each other's exam scores. "There was some friendly rivalry for a while," Isabella says. Their competitive relationship reached a turning point at the end of the fall semester when Jerome asked Isabella to accompany him to a campus recital. Isabella arrived wearing the same thing she'd had on in the laboratory earlier that day.

"Not the lab coat, but the same skirt," Isabella says. "I don't think he was all that friendly about it. He thought I could have at least dressed up for the occasion."

Nonetheless, from then on the two continued to spend time together outside the lab. Every Friday evening, Jerome and Isabella went to fifty-cent movie showings at a theater just off-campus. Their competition eased and soon transformed into mutual respect and admiration.

"We got to know each other better," Isabella says. "And I think the barriers just melted between us."

In 1942, Isabella and Jerome married. From the moment they met, their relationship was closely intertwined with their mutual love of chemistry. After earning their PhDs from Michigan (Isabella earned her B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. before the age of twenty-three), the couple went to work on the Manhattan Project, where Isabella was one of the highest-ranking female scientists on the team. By 1946, they had both begun work at the Naval Research Laboratory. The Washington, D.C. facility was rapidly expanding because of World War II, jumping from 396 employees in 1941 to 4,400 in 1946. It was there that they began working on the scientific research that defined their relationship and both of their careers.

Isabella and Jerome complemented each other when they worked on scientific problems together. Their collaboration had a yin-yang-like balance: Jerome was well-versed in abstract mathematical theory, and Isabella was a dogged experimentalist who could provide supporting evidence for his equations in the lab.

At N.R.L., with their combined brainpower, Jerome and Isabella began toying with a problem that many scientists believed to be mathematically unsolvable. Jerome had created a series of equations that could determine the structure of complex biological molecules, including proteins. His methodology had the potential to revolutionize drug development, allowing researchers to examine how drugs interact with proteins in the human body. Using his equations, scientists could more efficiently analyze molecules that otherwise may have taken years to fully examine.

Jerome's equations were useless, though, without experimental data to prove that they worked. He turned to Isabella, a seasoned experimentalist, for help.

In 1985, Jerome was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry, along with a colleague, Herbert Hauptman, who had worked with him on the mathematical equations. The Nobel Committee commended the two men "for outstanding achievements in the development of direct methods for the determination of crystal structures."

Yet the committee ignored Isabella's contribution to the problem and her hours of work collecting the experimental evidence necessary to validate their mathematical equations. Some writers and members of the crystallography community called out the Nobel Committee for its omission.

"There were a number of articles written about my being slighted, along with about four or five other women who previously should have had the Nobel but didn't," she says.

No one, Isabella says, was more chagrined than Jerome that she had not been listed for the prize.

"He was very disappointed that I didn't get it along with him," Isabella says. "But I told him to forget about it — I had enough prizes as it was." By that point, Isabella had indeed won a number of prizes for her experimental work, including the Navy's Superior Civilian Service Award. She went on to receive the National Medal of Science, awarded by President Clinton; the Women in Science and Engineering's Lifetime Achievement Award; and the Franklin Institute's prestigious Bower award, among others. Eventually, Isabella won more awards and more prize money for her work on crystal structures than her Nobel-winning husband did.

Today, she betrays no signs of bitterness over the Nobel snub that many scientists in her field, including her husband, found so heinous.

They married and had three daughters, all of whom work in scientific fields:

Louise Karle (born 1946) is a theoretical chemist

Jean Karle (1950) is an organic chemist

Madeleine Karle (1955) is a museum specialist with expertise in the field of geology.

Karle received many honors. She was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (1978) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1993). In addition, she received the National Medal of Science (1995), various awards, and eight honorary doctorates.

On July 31, 2009, Karle and her husband retired from the Naval Research Laboratory, after a combined 127 years of service to the United States Government, with Karle joining the NRL in 1946, two years after her husband. Retirement ceremonies for the Karles were attended by United States Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, who presented the couple with the Department of the Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the Navy's highest form of recognition to civilian employees.

On June 6, 2013, Karle died of liver cancer at the Leewood Healthcare Center in Annandale, Virginia, twelve days before what would have been his 95th birthday and Isabella died on October 3, 2017, at a hospice in Alexandria, Virginia.

No list of famous couples would be complete without mention of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn: two of history’s most captivating figures whose romance-turned-tragedy is known the world over.

When Anne first joined the English court in 1522 (as lady-in-waiting to Henry’s wife, Catherine of Aragon), the king had in his sights another Boleyn girl – Anne’s elder sister, Mary. It wasn’t until four years later that his attention turned to Anne, but, as Tudor historian Dr Suzannah Lipscomb explains, Henry “wouldn’t have been bowled over by her good looks. The surprising thing about Anne is that she wasn’t considered to be a great beauty.” It was her “character, intelligence and charm” and her “cosmopolitan glamour” that drew the king to her.

In January 1533, with Anne pregnant (with the future Elizabeth I), she and Henry were married in a secret ceremony and Henry broke with the Catholic church. Anne was crowned queen of England in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey in June.

As a child Irène Joliot-Curie (1897–1956) had the unusual experience of attending for two years a special school that emphasized science, organized by her mother, Marie Curie, and Marie’s scientific friends for their own children. Irène was still a teenager when she worked with her Nobel Prize-winning mother in the radiography corps during World War I. After the war she assisted her mother at the Radium Institute in Paris, meanwhile completing her doctorate. She married Frédéric Joliot (1900–1958), a young physicist who had come to work with her mother.
 The Joliot-Curies won the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their artificial creation of new radioactive elements by the bombardment of alpha particles (helium nuclei, He2+) on various light elements. They correctly interpreted the continued positron emission that occurred after bombardment had ceased as evidence that “radioactive isotopes” of known elements had been created. Up to this point, the only way to obtain radioactive elements was to painstakingly extract them from their natural ores at considerable cost.
 With the Joliot-Curies’ discovery, useful radioactive isotopes were now relatively easy and inexpensive to produce, and they rapidly became important tools in biomedical research and in the treatment of cancer. In its presentation speech the Nobel Prize Committee acknowledged, “The results of your researches are of capital importance for pure science, but in addition, physiologists, doctors, and the whole of suffering humanity hope to gain from your discoveries, remedies of inestimable value.”

The Joliot-Curies were the parents of a boy and a girl, Pierre and Helene, both of whom became scientists—thus continuing a famous scientific dynasty. Irène and Frédéric died in Paris, two years apart.

Although Western society may not instantly recall Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal as one of the most famous couples in history, their whirlwind romance is incredibly well known in India.

In 1607, the young prince Jahan was wandering through a marketplace when he first glimpsed the daughter of a noble family, Mumtaz Mahal, and fell instantly and irrevocably in love, as people in ye olden days tended to do. They were betrothed for five years, and married in 1612. Shah did amass two or three other wives during this period, but of all his wives, he only loved Mumtaz; the other marriages were political. At least that’s Shah’s spin on things.

The royal sweethearts were much loved by the people of the Mughal Empire, and when, 24 years and 14 (fourteen!) children later, Mumtaz died, Jahan ordered two years of mourning be observed and had the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, constructed in her honour.

Both Diego and Frida were artists from Mexico. Diego was in the Mexican mural movement, while Kahlo was best known for her self-portraits. The two met when Kahlo joined the Mexican Communist Party and sort advice from the accomplished painter. 

 The couple married in 1929 and two years later, while staying in San Francisco, Kahlo painted the wedding portrait above. The ribbon held in the beak of the dove above the couple reads: “Here you see us, me Frida Kahlo, with my beloved husband Diego Rivera. I painted these portraits in the beautiful city of San Francisco, California, for our friend Mr. Albert Bender, and it was in the month of April in the year 1931.”

The message symbolizes love. But that said, the artists impression of the couple suggests a different story. Rivera’s large figure faces away from his wife while his eyes look awkwardly towards us. He holds a palette and brushes, suggesting he is the extraordinary maestro. Kahlo’s head tilts towards him, one hand clutches her stomach while the other is gently placed on his hand.

Another painting that Kahlo has done is this self-portrait in 1940. Rivera’s image is stamped on her forehead suggesting he’s not only on her mind but part of her. She once wrote in her diary that Rivera was her everything. The strands from the headpiece of the traditional Mexican dress she’s wearing form a web, depicting herself as trapped in an all consuming-romance.

Marie Curie and her husband, Pierre came together through a shared love of science and research. They spent their marriage working side by side, sharing ground-breaking scientific discoveries and a Nobel Prize.

Polish by birth, Maria Sklodowska moved to France in 1891 and enrolled at Sorbonne University in Paris. She was introduced to Pierre Curie by Polish physicist and Professor, Count Józef Wierusz-Kowalski. 

Józef had actually known Marie for some time, having sponsored her through her studies in Warsaw and invited her to stay when she moved to Paris. He also helped her gain her place at Sorbonne.On her first meeting with Pierre, Marie recalled: “As I entered the room, Pierre Curie was standing in the recess of a French window opening on a balcony. He seemed to me very young, though he was at that time 35 years old.

"I was struck by the open expression of his face and by the slight suggestion of detachment in his whole attitude. His speech, rather slow and deliberate, his simplicity, and his smile, at once grave and youthful, inspired confidence.”Within a year, Pierre asked for Marie’s hand in marriage. At the time, she did not accept because she planned to return to Poland to work.

But when Marie was denied a place at Kraków University because she was a woman, Pierre convinced her to return to Paris.

On 26 July 1895 Pierre and Marie had a civil wedding ceremony in Sceaux. Instead of a bridal gown, Marie chose a dark blue dress. She explained: “I have no dress except the one I wear every day.

"If you are going to be kind enough to give me one, please let it be practical and dark so that I can put it on afterwards to go to the laboratory.”

For their honeymoon, the Curies took a bicycle tour around the French countryside. Pierre and Marie had two daughters, Irene and Eve.

Tsarina Alexandra, wife of Tsar Nicholas II, was supposed to marry another man. The granddaughter of England's Queen Victoria, Alexandra rejected an arranged marriage to her cousin when she fell in love with the heir to the Russian throne. The marriage produce four daughters and a single male heir, Alexei. Alix, as the Russian queen was called, carried the gene for hemophilia and passed it on to the couple's son. The couple's popularity in Russia dwindled, as conditions ripened for revolution. When Nicholas fought in World War I, Alexandra managed affairs at home with the help of faith healer Grigori Rasputin. Rumors swirled that Alexandra was sympathetic to Germany, and bred resentment against the rulers that led the country into a full civil war. Alexandra and her children were executed by the Bolsheviks on July 17, 1918.

Unfortunately, Alexei was born with hemophilia, a life-threatening and incurable disease carried by Alexandra through her grandmother, Queen Victoria. This did not stop the couple from devoting everything to all their children, as Alexandra herself took to caring for them. Unlike most royals of the time, she fed her children from her own breast and taught them all that she was taught in her childhood, such as making the bed and baking cakes. So even though they were a busy couple dealing with the war and a sick child. That didn’t stop them from finding the time to take care of their family and their children. Whether it being actual help or emotional support. And in my opinion, that is what makes a marriage successful.

commitment: In a long term relationship, commitment means being willing to work on difficulties together, planning for the future together and clarifying and protecting the boundaries you’ve agreed on. 

friendship: A lasting friendship often equals a strong relationship overall because you share a deeper bond that goes beyond a romantic level. With friendship, you have a more durable foundation that's fulfilling on multiple parts.

trust: If friendship is the foundation, distrust is what can seep in between the cracks and make it all crumble. Even if you and your partner check off all the other nine items on this list, your relationship will not survive without trust.

respect: Every healthy relationship should be built upon mutual respect. Both parties should recognize each other as equals and should always be open to their partner's thoughts, beliefs, concerns, and needs.

Henry Charles Albert David known generically as Prince Harry.He  was born on September

 15, 1984. He is the second child of the Heir Apparent of the United Kingdom, Prince Charles by his first wife Diana Princess of Wales. He is the sixth in line to the British throne after his father, Prince Charles, his older brother Prince William, and his nephews Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Harry launched Invictus games in 2014, and is still the sponsor of their foundation. He also sponsors several other organizations, including the Hello Trust, the London Marathon charity, and the Walking with the Wounded Foundation. On May 19, 2018, he married American Actress Megan Markle. His grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, hours before the wedding, awarded him the titles of Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkill, all of which were titles of nobility in the United Kingdom. On May 6, 2019, they gave birth to their first son, Archie Mountbatten, Windsor.

He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst from which all British Land Forces officers graduate.

On November 27, 2017, he announced his relationship with former actress Megan Markle, as they held an engagement party on the same day and that they intend to get married in the next year 2018.
