Henson accompanied Peary to Greenland in June 1891, along with Peary's wife, Josephine, and a party that included the Arctic explorer Frederick Albert Cook. During this trip Henson began to study the Inuit who lived at the northern end of Greenland. He learned to speak their language and he studied their customs and methods of Arctic survival. Henson soon became popular with the Inuit, who nicknamed him Maripaluk, which means "kind Matthew ."Notes: Peary said he would be the first person to be at the north pole, because he was mad with what had happened. Peary went to greenland with Henson, Peary's wife, and a crew. Henson started to study the people who lived in this area of Greenland.
