They brought awareness to issues like unsafe working conditions, and political corruption followed by public outrage and reform. For example, Upton Sinclair's The Jungle showed the terrible conditions in the meatpacking industry with the establishment of the Meat Inspection Act. The works of Ida Tarbell against Standard Oil helped with breaking the monopoly, while Lincoln Steffens revealed corrupt city governments, which all created political and social change.
