In the top box of the cartoon it shows the car salesman are judging the man thinking he's too poor to buy a car. So they let the rookie salesman take him. Little did they know the man they thought was poor and wouldn't buy anything left the dealer with a brand new truck. This cartoon connects to the story The War of The Wall because the narrator and Lou were judging the painter thinking the painter was trying to destroy the wall when she was really just trying to do something nice and dedicate a mural to Jimmy Lyons. A person that was part of the community who died in the Vietnam war.

Thinking Questions By: Zoe Higgins

Q1. Why do you think the painter lied so much to the community of the neighborhood? How do you think this changed the communities perspective on the painter?

A1. We believe that the painter lied to the community because she was afraid of judgement and accusations. Although she was fearing and trying to avoid judgement she made the neighborhood community think lowly of her.

The main character and Lou felt betrayed when they saw the painter in the local restaurant after turning down the little girls dinner offer. The painter turned the little girls dinner offer down claiming she had brought her own dinner. Clearly the women did not bring her own dinner and lied to the community. Instead she went to the restaurant owned by the main characters family and made many complaints about there food options. This made the community make assumptions that the lady was not a trustworthy person due to these lies and accusations. This also infuriated the main characters mother who is also the owner of the restaurant. She felt insulted by the painters requests and complaints. Readers can see the mothers anger when the narrator states "She was tapping her foot and heating up in a dangerous way." This shows that disrespect and anger the owner of the restaurant felt.

Q2. What were the differences in behavior towards the wall being painted between Lou and the main character?

A2. Lou and the main character were both infuriated by the sight of the painter painting over the wall they grew up playing games on. However there calls to action were quite different. The main character wanted to do anything in his power to stop the wall from being painted. Lou was very invested in making sure the wall was not being painted but the main character came up with most of their plans. The main character always seems to be thinking about ways to interfere with the painting of the wall while Lou tends to only think about the topic when the main character talks about it. Lou also does not seem to get as infuriated at the fact the wall is being painted. For instance in paragraph 16 in the text the main character states, "Lou had to drag me away, I was so mad." The main character is referring to being dragged away from the wall because of how angry he was.

There is a wall in a small town that all of the kids play on. One day there is a painter that decides to paint on the wall, however, there are a few kids that don't want her to paint on the wall. They start to annoy her hoping that she would leave. It doesn't work, they then have to resort to destroying her painting, so they buy a ton of white paint (they used all their money on it). When they come back, however, they realize that they had it all wrong and that she was actually trying to do something that they all liked. Also, she was the cousin of one of the people in the town.

L1. "To the people of Taliaferro Street I dedicate this wall of respect pointed in memory of my cousin Jimmy Lyons." This is important because it shows how she wasn't a bad person, she was just trying to pay respect for her cousin.
L2. "It was our wall, and she had no right coming into our neighborhood painting on it." This is important because it shows how important and symbolic the wall was to these people because of how many years people have played near it.
L3. "But Mama said that seeing as how she was from the North, you couldn't expect her to have any manners." This is important because it shows how people have stereotypes for every single type of person that it different from them, it's just how human nature works.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2RHaCwzczb8ZeY7qFecdrl?si=E3JGEKUjSFyip8K5HtFhyQ

Above is a link to our ten song playlist. All ten of these songs connect to our story The War of The Wall.

The first song on the playlist is Empire State Of Mind by JAY-Z and Alicia Keys. This song connects to the story because in the song Alicia Keys says "in New York." just like the setting of The War of the Wall. The second song on the playlist is September by Earth and Wind & Fire. This song connects to the story because the song was very popular in the 80s and this book takes place in the 80s. The third song on the playlist is Blank Space by Taylor Swift and in the song Taylor Swift says "and i'll write your name." This connects to the story because this is like the painter is talking to Jimmy Lyons saying she'll write his name on the wall. The fourth song on the playlist is Sorry by Future. This song connects to the story because at the end of the book when the girls find out that the painter was painting the wall of a mural of Jimmy Lyons they seemed like they were very sorry for being so mean to him.
The fifth song on the playlist is More Than a Woman by Bee Gee. This song connects to the story because same as September it was a very popular song in the 80s. The sixth song on the playlist is Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K 467: ll. Andante by Mozart. This song connects to the story because this song is very mellow and calming so it seems like something the painter would be listening to while painting the mural. The seventh song on the playlist is Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. This song connects to the story because just like September and More Than a Woman Billie Jean was a very popular song in the 80s. The eighth song on the playlist is Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival. This song connects to the story because Fortunate Son is about the Vietnam war and the story takes place during the Vietnam war and that's how Jimmy Lyons died. The Ninth song on the playlist is U Can't Touch This because the narrator and Lou strongly dislike that the painter is touching their communities wall. The tenth and last song on the playlist is Changes by XXXTENTACION. This song connects to the story because the title is called changes and in the song XXXTENTACION is talking about how he doesn't like change just like how the narrator and Lou don't like the change that's happening with their communities wall.

A connection I can do is in a ted talk about how he lost his mother and made music about it and the woman painting over the name of Jimmy. As everyone in the town knew that Jimmy was gone they decided to carve his name in a wall. Well for the ted talk he made music to cherish his mother. Music can impact people from within if they have experienced something familiar to the act. When people listen to his music they just hear lyricist what he here's is his mother. You wouldn't think about it unless he told you it was about. With the woman painting she is related to Jimmy so she is doing her for him by painting something about him but no one would know why she is doing it what why she painted that image on the wall. To listen to the ted talk click here or copy and past it https://www.ted.com/talks/hrishikesh_hirway_what_you_discover_when_you_really_listen

Symbolism of the Wall Meredith Doucette

My symbol that I have chosen is the wall, the wall is an important symbol to the neighborhood and community because they have cherished memories with it. The wall symbolizes what the family has gone through during the years, For instance in this quote it says, “Big kids have been playing handball against the wall since so-called integration” (pg 1, Bambara). This quote represents what people have done to the wall during different years. Since integration was “a time in U.S history, beginning in the 1950s, when people worked to get rid of discrimination against Afircan Americans.” (pg 1, Bambra). So as you can see from this quote integration was when people were working against dicrimination. That was a pretty big time in history and I’m sure that there were hardships and that the families struggled in the neighborhood. It also mentions “I’d sprained my neck one time boosting my cousin Lou up to chisel Jimmy Lyon’s name into the wall when we found out he was never coming home from the war in Vietnam to take us fishing.” (pg 1, Bambara). This quote here is about Jimmy Lyons who was in the Vietnam War. I have a feeling that Jimmy Lyons was in the military since this book I believe was written sometime in the late 1900s. This quote here goes with how the family has gone through a lot during the years and how the wall has always been used when there have been hardships. The wall has turned into a possession for the neighborhood and community. It’s the wall that they look forward to meeting their friends and family at, it’s the place that people bring food to meet up with family, it’s the place where they remembered friends and family that have passed, and it’s now also the place that’s being covered with paint. These are all the thoughts and feelings that the family and friends felt as they saw the painter painting “their'' wall. How do you think you would feel if someone was painting one of your possessions? You probably wouldn’t be happy. It’s like someone painted something of yours without consulting your feelings and opinions. But even the families in the neighborhood weren’t happy because the painter was painting the wall. The wall is still full of hardships, in this quote it says “To the people of Taliaferro Street I Dedicate This Wall of Respect Painted in Memory of My Cousin Jimmy Lyons”. So as you can see the families and neighbors felt as if the painter was trying to ignore the significance that the wall has. But the painter wasn’t trying to paint over the events, she was trying to paint the events.

The theme of the the book The War of the Wall is don't judge a book by its cover because throughout the story the narrator and Lou were judging the painter thinking she was trying to destroy the communities wall while in reality all she was trying to do was paint a mural of one of the deceased veterans from the community, Jimmy Lyons. Here in the text is says "I Couldn't breathe either. The painter lady had found the chisel marks and had painted Jimmy Lyons's name in the rainbow (Bambara, 5)." This shows that the narrator and Lou appreciated the painter and regret being so mean.

A social issue that could connect to this story is political opinion. Some people get judge about what they believe in politically. Like the story The War of the Wall the woman is getting judge for her appearance and that she didn't eat the food that the town gave her. Well they didn't know she was a vegetarian and didn't want to eat the meat. With voting some people get very mean and rude comments for supporting a political side, either republican or democratic side. Some people even get death threats to their own family for voting on a side. This has been happing all over the world and should stop now. Its people option so don't judge people for what they vote on or what they look like or do.

My connection is Green Eggs and Ham to The War of the Wall because in The War of the Wall they judge the woman for not eating the food and she gets followed and found out why she isn't eating the food. In Green Eggs and Ham sam was trying to get the guy to eat it and they find out why he wasn't eating it but then he tries it and not likes the food. This is showing that people will judge anyone for anything even if its as simple as eating or not eating a certain food.
