I think that an astrolabe was the main instrument for the long time journeys at the past. With its help the navigators could measure the height of the stars above the horizon and to determine accurately the position of the stars in the sky.

As a teacher of  ancient Greek language, I love the etymology of words. And in this word there are two parts: "archaeo" that  means something old and "astronomy"  that means the desire of exploring the stars.

In this module we will deepen our knowledge on the history of navigation, highlighting the historical and cultural background that set the stage for the scientific progress and technological inventions we enjoy today and which will be advancing in the future. 
We will address particular concepts related to the movement of the Sun during the day and the movement of stars and planets in the night sky. We will also be talking about cardinal directions, latitude and longitude concepts, and coordinate systems, understanding how stars can be used to measure latitude of a certain location.

The Antikythera mechanism is one of the most valuable findings of antiquity. Discovered in 1900 in a shipwreck near Antikythera in depth between 40-60 meters below sea level.   This finding probably built in the 2nd century BC, while the sinking took place for the first half of the 1st century BC
The astrolabe or computer as otherwise named this mechanism resembles a watch, consisting of a series of toothed sprockets and it is the oldest surviving system composed of gears. Made of bronze, with thirty gears moving into ten axes, the Antikythera mechanism has attracted the interest of researchers - scientists.
The use of the Antikythera mechanism is believed that it helped in astronomical observations and served the sailors to be oriented. It was not a simple astrolabe and researchers are trying to unravel the secrets of this machine.
