Mail-in voting has become a growing topic for the upcoming election. With Covid-19 on the minds of most voters, mail-in ballots would lower the risk of disease by reducing the voting crowds at polling places. However, the Trump administration has been warning voters about the potential fraud that voting by mail can cause.

Explain the Contrasting Views Regarding the Problem

Democrats: The problem comes from voters having little information on their voting rights and voting procedures. Trump's campaign has been talking about an instance where ballots were found discarded in a river, but they have not released which river and which state. States have made initiatives to prevent fraud, New Jersey has created secure locations to drop off ballots and Wisconsin has used an advertisement agency to create graphics that explain the statistics behind voter fraud. In Pennsylvania 9 ballots were discarded improperly due to a rookie election official making a mistake. Once Trump found out that 7 of the 9 were votes for him he made the case that election officials are trying to steal the election from him.

Republicans: Mail-in ballots lead to fraud in the form of tampering, altering, stealing and imitating voters. The argument is that ballots should not be sent to every eligible voters, but only those who have a signed, authenticated request for an absentee ballot. Trump agrees that absentee ballots for the elderly, military, and those who physically cannot make it to polling locations. Mail-in ballots have been mailed to previous addresses, and are at risk of being stolen and filled out. Nancy Pelosi's Corona Virus bill wanted to mail ballots out to every registers voter, and that is why republicans wouldn't agree to it. Pelosi's home state of California, and the city of Los Angeles, removed a combined 1.5 million voters who were no longer eligible to vote. Richard Davis, resident of California, registered his four dogs and deceased dad to vote just to prove how easy it was to commit voter fraud. North Carolina's 9th Congressional District had its 2018 election overturned due to vote harvesting, stealing ballots from mail boxes. Washington County, Oregon in a study showed that 5% admitted to someone else marking their ballot with 2.4% admitting someone else signs their ballots. In the State of New Mexico 1,700 deceased voters were still registered, with 1,500 over 100 years of age, 64 over 120 year of age, and 200 were registered using commercial addresses and not residential.

With more ballots being mailed out, and states not checking on the validity of the voter, it could lead to wide spread voter fraud. Mail is sent to previous addresses all the time, if the voter has not updated their address what is to stop someone from voting for them and sending it in? The media had discussed how Trump supporters might stand outside polling places and try to intimidate voters, what is to stop voter intimidation when your votes can be seen in the mail? However, these cases do seem to be smaller or more regional in comparison to the national election. The military and elderly have been voting via mail for many years now and no fraud has been committed from those groups.

After the 2016 election President Trump formed the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election to find cases of voter fraud that President Trump claimed led to him losing the popular vote. von Sparkovsky immediately used the Heritage database as official documents, and he did not want democrats involved with the task force. The group disbanded after seven months with no fraud discovered.

Most cases of fraudulent absentee ballots were because the voters were confused over voting laws. The Blakes moved from 372 Curtis Street to 1372 Curtis Street, crossing city lines, and they were fined $700 dollars. A nursing home worker was fined $100 dollars because she did not sign that she helped the elderly fill out their ballots. And a mother was fined $200 for signing her son's absentee request.
