Alan knows he is untouchable because there is a strict rule the doctors there can not be gay. A murder happens that includes Alan, his best friend, and this untouchable man. This book is captivating between this fantastic love story, a murder mystery, and someone finding out their true self. At first, I didn't want to read it but I am happy I did. I loved the character Dickon, who wouldn't want to be able to speak to all kinds of animals and get to play with baby deers and foxes. At first, both Mary and Colin really annoyed me but then once I really thought about it they never got any love or attention both were hated by all one was told always he would die and both never saw their parents. I just love the storyline and how they all become to be more like children all because of a simple garden. I thought it was funny they way the author wrote and how some of the characters spoke. The word they used was sort of weird. This book is about to characters called Lina and Doon they both are twelve but as soon as the gradt=uate from school they are all assigned jobs. Lina becomes an underground pipe worker when she wanted to be a messenger. Her only chance was to trade with Doon. While she was delivering she heard some very troubling problems such as the light going out for good and the food stores low on food. Doon also finds out the energy from the generator is decreasing. This is all bad because if the power and light are out there is nowhere to go cause the are surrounded by darkness. Lina sets of to find out where their grandfather who used to be mayor of Ember hid something that might fix their problems.
