- The Scarlet Letter starts off with the scene of dreary-looking people gather outside the door of the prison. 
- The prison door is studded with spikes and right next to it a rosebush grows.

Chapter 2: "The Market Place"
- In this chapter Hester Prynne emerges from the prison with an infant in her hands.
- She makes her way to the scaffold, where she is to be publicly condemned, and is doomed to stand for 3 hours with a mark of shame.
- Hester has flashbacks.

Chapter 3: "The Recognition"
- Hester back story is briefly explained. She has been living in Boston for 2 years without her husband. The baby is 3 or 4 months old.
