As for how the persona is considered a 'dead man' herself, perhaps because how she feels that we is 'still lying', still reminiscing about her mother and that moment so painful and lifeless, who has ever since been surrounded by death, she now sees herself in that image surrounded by death, therefore now refers to herself as 'dead' . The fact that the persona has still not '[crossed]' the 'border' suggests that she is still stuck in that image of death and loss, still not having come to terms with her mother's absence, hence a 'dead [man]' conversing with another 'dead [man]'. The word 'forget' could also symbolise how because she is stuck in that moment, she never forgets it, but does forget everything else, including the larger epiphany of being stuck with death.

On the other hand it could also just be a direct contrast to the persona's determination to live. The image of 'dead men conversing with dead men' is a morose and hopeless message that nothing ever matters and that everyone around is as already dead. This strikes a contrast with the persona's youthful determination and perseverance, perhaps showing how useless and childish it all is to hold on to life. After all the 'clenching and opening' of 'one small hand' indicates vulnerability and dying yet desperate faith. Thus the epigraph is used to almost mock the young persona's will to live.
