         <description><![CDATA[<div>The largest oil spill in history was casued by a wellhead blowout and led to hundreds of millions of gallons of oil to be poured into the ocean. 11 people were killed and over 8000 different marine organisms were impacted. Officials used a variety of cleanup methods such as booms, chemical dispersants, and more. The well has since been closed but reports state it still leaks to this day.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>21,000 tons of toxic waste were discovered to have been buried underground of Love Canal near the Niagara Falls. After the industrial chemical waste seeped into the wate supply, Residents near Love Canal experienced various birth defects. Federal funds were used to build trenches to drain the toxic waste water out, though the victims continue to be impacted today as their offspring are susceptible to birth defects.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The gas company PG&amp;E dumped 370 million gallons of chromium that contaminated the groundwater near the town of Hinckley. As a result, those who lived near the contaminated groundwater site experienced higher rates of cancer. Even after cleaning 54 acres, PG&amp;E cleanup experts still expect at least 40 more years of efforts are still necessary to completely rid the area of the chemical.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>For over a century, the Cuyahoga River was the site of various industrial waste dumpings as well as continual agricultural and urban runoff. This caused the river to be prone to combustion, resulting in five deaths and millions in damages. Fish in the river were frequently deemed too contaminated for consumption. The condition of the river helped spark the creation of the CWA though it remains partially contaminated to this day.</div>]]></description>

As a result, the rate for childhood leukemia was much higher in the small town as compared to other parts of the U.S. While cleanup efforts have been put into place, the water remains partially contaminated to this date.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A local water treatment plant was found to be contaminated with dangerous parasites. The source of the parasite were never fully concluded though some experts suspect it to be a result of cattle runoff. An estimated 25% of Milwaukee residents were impacted, causing some of those with weak or corrupted immune systems (such as the elderly and AIDs victims) to die. The outbreak only lasted one month before it was contained.</div>]]></description>

Chemicals such as boron, iron, lead, chloride, and others were said to have been in the groundwater. Some the coal ash ponds were feared to have been containing partially radioactive material. Drinking water for over 1 million people was contaminated and these ash basins have since been closed.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Every year the Mississippi River carries down an excessive amount of agricultural nutrients and fertilizer which eventually make their way to the Gulf of Mexico. These nutrients and fertilizers lead to algae blooms and dead zones. As a result, thousands of marine species in the area are negatively impacted as well as various fishing industries. This event will continue to occur unless the agricultural industries discovers more effecient means of nourishing crops.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>GE was discovered to have been participating in irresponsible dumping practices as the Hudson River was found to have been polluted with PCBs. Fish were contaminated and those exposed to the chemical developed brain and nervous function issues. The EPA has since banned the production of PCBs and the CWA has helped protect the river from contamination.</div>]]></description>
