Counselors and administrators must be aware of the laws that require the identification of students that meet eligibility criteria for Section 504.  For students that may exhibit ADHD symptoms, the law requires school staff to identify students.  School counselors may provide individual or group counseling to students with special needs.  The responsibilities of the school counselor may also include encouraging parent involvement, consulting with family and staff regarding specific accommodations, and advocating for students through resources and the community ("The School Counselor," 2016).

Laws and bills that have been initiated that will impact the role of school counselors are the Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act and the Perkins V.  The Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act would provide more staff and reduce the number of student to school counselor ration.   The Perkins V act would require school counselors to provide career readiness activities through a planned framework.

One legal issue that is explored in Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act includes Information about the rights of students and parents; eligibility of students to received accommodations and/or other related services.  Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act prevents discrimination of students based on a disability or handicap.

Another legal issue included on the website is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).  Under FERPA parents and students are given certain rights to obtain and view a student's educational records.  The website provides resources to gather detailed information on the type of information available to parents and students.  Additional information includes information on the consequences if the law is not followed.
