Visit Schools Abroad: They are still in session in Europe!

Thanks to my friend whose daughter was in the class, I visited a fifth-grade bilingual classroom at a school in Paris called "La Canopee" for children ages 4 to 10. The classes are capped at 16 students and every subject is taught in English and French on alternate days. All children are taught the basics of each concept and skill. The differentiation system they use consists of three symbols: the shield, the belt and the javelin. The shield is the first step of learning and all the children are exposed to the same basic skills. Once students are assessed for mastery, they are able to move on to more in-depth or abstract applications of the knowledge (the belt), and the javelin symbolizes that they are able to help their friends. During independent work time, students are given a symbol that they put on their desk to let the teacher know at what step in the sequence they are working.

Students were working on end-of-the-year projects in teams of two or on their own. in English. One of the projects (unfinished) can be seen in the picture. The teacher asked me to help the children work on this assignment. I mostly tried to help them do more research on the two-party system, as they had expressed opinions in their writing about the presidents that were not grounded in facts.

As a learning specialist, I was immediately drawn to a student who, unlike most of the other children who were clearly engaged and working independently, found it difficult to sustain her focus. I asked her what she was doing, and she explained that she was paraphrasing a text into her own words. She needed someone to be with her the whole time she wrote, although she was able to formulate and write her ideas down on her own.

Children who need support beyond the classroom teacher's have lessons after school with private providers who work in tandem with the school.
