If a student was anxious about presenting their writing I could put the chair behind some type of curtain so that they don’t feel watched, judged, or vulnerable. This may make them feel more comfortable when reading their work.

Challenges with the Author’s Chair

Our first station discussion the celebratory stage of writers workshop where we dove into the idea of the “author’s chair”. Here, students get a special seat where they are able to share their work with students in a way that makes them feel like they’re the star of the show. Then, classmates provide positive and encouraging feedback. This idea is great; however, many students would not feel comfortable with this singled out approach. To accommodate this, some alternatives may include: having another student read to the class on their behalf, pre-recording and sharing the audio or video file instead of a live performance, presenting to a small group or just the teacher instead of the entire class.

You can let the student choose what way they want to present and accommodate them in a way that will help them feel comfortable. Presenting in an author’s chair may look like students recording themselves or presenting infront of just the teacher or a few friends.

Navigating the Authors Chair

As not every student may feel comfortable speaking in front of the class there are many ways to navigate around that. Throughout we can take stepping stones to work towards being able to share in front of the class. Having the student share just in front of you their thoughts, knowledge and work. From there they are able to share in front of a friend, record themselves and share to the instructor. When comfortable they can share their video with the class. Students can also have the teacher prompt them by posing questions that they can answer about their work.

As not all students will want to share their writing in front of the class, if this is due to a fear of public speaking, you could offer to read their writing for them. This way they could still have their work celebrated!

With AI, there are programs where you can input text and select a cartoon character that will present whatever text is entered. This could be a good transitional option while students may be working up to the idea of presenting one-on-one, with a couple of peers, and perhaps ultimately in front of their class. A program off the top of my head with this feature is “Plotagon.” More are definitely available upon further research.

A great visual representation for students to work through a literacy text. It allows students to formate their opinions and reasons supported by examples. It provides students to connect to real world examples to support comprehension and application.

We will support learners by demonstrating with mentor texts. We will provide time to reflect on the mentor texts and apply the similarities and differences to their own work.

We discussed options for presenting, embedded slides, video, voice notes. With the next goal to be presenting ro small groups. Then moving up to authors chair.

it is important to scaffold the students skills when it comes to public speaking. Start by creating vlogs, have a few people watching the vlog, have the student present to a small group and continue to build until presenting to the full class.

Authors chair - another idea is that we could also 'publish' the book, and add it to the school library where other peers or parents could 'check-out' the book.

If there is a time in which a student would like to share, but they have anxiety or stress talking to a class, there can be an option to allow the student to do their sharing in front of a camera and you can then play the video in front of the class, with the permission of the student.

Centre 4: we've seen writing one sentence about a topic, and sounding out the words. Question of the day where students read the question and write out their answer.

Do teacher conferences have to be one-on-one or can they be done in small groups? The student in the conference didn’t look comfortable sharing her story, and the teacher seemed to be pushing her and almost forcing her to explain
