1. STRENGTHS

I believe that throughout my second year of training at Shockout Arts, my strengths within the Core Techniques module have enhanced further. This is due to my continued focus on taking onboard the feedback from teachers and critically applying it to my own work. Consequently, this ensured that my skill sets in ballet, jazz and contemporary improved to their best potential.

I feel that anatomical awareness and the correct use of muscles within technique is one of my strongest qualities. For example; I know that without engaging my abdominals and the lateral muscles in my back, my pirouettes will not be executed as well. Within my jazz and ballet lessons is when I learned and understood the correct method for perfect pirouettes, and after embodying this, I can now rely on my muscle memory for the correct body placement and alignment, and concentrate more on my performance.

Within lessons, David Needham dissects his exercises whilst teaching, delivering verbal anatomical knowledge alongside demonstrating the movements. This massively helped me because I could then understand exactly which muscles should be contracting and which should be released, making my shapes and lines look cleaner and the style of Luigi become more natural. This also becomes a transferrable skill that helps in other styles such as commercial, because I am forced to think what muscles to use when a choreographer hits a shape. This makes my dancing more powerful and improves my dynamics.

Another of my strengths is my ability to travel and use the space given. I find that as a small dancer this is a key quality that I need to have. It is within my jazz and contemporary lessons that I achieve this. Turning and travelling sequences from the corner within David Needham and Eric Carpenter's lessons are what pushed me to use the space including the use of levels, line and execution.

A quality that needs improvement within the Core Techniques module would most definitely be my flexibility and extension.

As I regularly attend the gym to ensure my body is in good shape and fit for purpose, it can have a knock on affect and tighten my muscles, decreasing their range of motion. Therefore my weakness is that I have not found effective balance of weight and muscle mass that still allows my body to be flexible enough to hit grand jetés or other movements that require a good level of extension within core techniques. In order to beat this weakness, I need to stretch every single day before and after the gym, or go to the gym less and prioritise my flexibility and stretching exercises. I need to stretch predominantly, my hamstrings, quadriceps, gluteus maximus and gastrocnemius.

Another area of weakness is the strength of my ankles. It’s within ballet that this becomes highlighted, as when working on relevé or doing tendu exercises, my ankles start to ache easily and this prevents me from holding a rise for longer periods of time which if not improved, will affect my pirouettes. In order to have strong ankles I need to strengthen my metatarsals and the muscles around the ankle such as my gastrocnemius muscle. This will make it easier for me when holding a rise and enable me to execute more pirouettes, instead of just 2 or 3.

Over the last semester I have become better at Musical Theatre as a result of the Core Techniques module. I believe that within this industry a key quality to acquire is being a ‘triple threat’, (having the ability to dance, act and sing all at a high level) Within our Musical Theatre assessment, we had to incorporate skills from jazz, by dancing and displaying a sense of technique through a jazz style routine with partner work and lifts as well as singing in time to the music. For me it was a challenge however after a number of rehearsals it’s something that has improved this semester and I will continue to perfect.

Over the next academic year, I would like to learn more about Musical Theatre and also have more stretch classes to better my weaknesses. Having the stretch class will benefit me personally and if I work hard enough, I will gain quick and efficient results. The Musical Theatre training will help build my stamina and will influence me to be a versatile dancer and multitask during a performance.
