1963 Betty explictly objected to the mainstream media imageof women as housewives. She identified women's unhappiness at the limited role given them as 'the problem that has no name'.

She wrote: “The problem that has no name -which is simply the fact that American women are kept from growing to their full human capacities- is taking a far greater toll on the physical and mental health of the country than any known disease.”

1970 Kate Millett’s Sexual Politics made the best-seller list and in it she broadened the term politics to include all “power-structured relationships” and claimed that the personal was actually political.

1970 Germaine Greer's book The Female Eunuch, 1970,was a key text of the feminist movement in the 1970s. It argued that the "traditional" suburban, consumerist, nuclear family represses women sexually, and that this devitalizes them, rendering them ‘eunuchs’.

Germaine Greer visits New Zealand
