Hi, I am Shaun Luis C. Avila, and my personal interest in Philippine Pop Culture is P-pop. I took comfort in listening to SB19 during the pandemic, particularly their songs Going Up and MAPA, which spoke to me and to millions of others. SB19 paved the way for the boom of P-pop, proving that Filipino talent can become huge in the international scene. Likewise, BINI, the P-pop girl group, has changed the face of P-pop by reaching out to international fans with their new songs and empowering messages. Through these groups, P-pop has expanded, gaining much-deserved recognition and molding the future of Philippine music.

Filipino OPM (Original Pilipino Music) has always been a dominant part of Philippine pop culture, taking center stage in the mainstream media with its emotional stories and distinctive blend of influences. OPM evolved beyond the usual ballads, branching out into genres like indie, pop-rock, and alternative, captivating local and international listeners as well. The pandemic was the momentum for the industry, with online media like Spotify, YouTube, and TikTok providing breakthrough artists with the spotlight, and Adie taking the lead through his emotional and viral singles. This revolution led to the emergence of a new breed of OPM acts like The Ridleys, popular for their melodic and tear-jerking songs; Cup of Joe, who are admired for their beautiful and dynamic sound; and Over October, whose songs speak to many individuals because of its relatability. Despite the challenges, the pandemic solidified OPM's hold, bearing testament that Filipino music continues to stand and evolve, leaving a lasting impact on the industry and on the next generations.

My analysis of OPM

Filipino OPM, being a product of the contemporary Philippine pop culture, brings change in every facet of society by influencing emotions, identity, and online participation. Based on the Uses and Gratifications Theory, we can observe how audiences engage actively with OPM not just for entertainment but also for emotional bonding, social bonding, and self-expression. Amidst the pandemic and to today, artists such as Adie, The Ridleys, Cup of Joe, and Over October became popular as people looked for comfort and relatability in music, proving that OPM is not just entertainment. The move to online platforms also revolutionized the dissemination and consumption of music, opening the doors for independent artists to flourish without the help of mainstream media. This revolution empowered artists to create genuine, heartfelt material that speaks to the audience's struggles, love life, and dreams, giving rise to a stronger cultural identity among Filipinos.

Moreover, OPM's digital revolution molds the economic and creative industries by redefining success in the music industry. The presence of streaming websites and social media allows artists to engage directly with their audience, bypassing the traditional gatekeepers imposed by radio and television. This revolution brings music production closer to more potential artists, allowing them to disseminate their craft without the big labels. The success of emotionally charged and sonically diverse artists demonstrates how OPM is now the voice of the youth, expressing society's feelings and experiences through melodic stories. Therefore, contemporary OPM not only entertains but also builds a common cultural experience, influencing trends, online interaction, and personal identity in Philippine pop culture.
