Ancient Rome had numerous problems that led to its downfall. The most significant problem was revolving around their health. One very important health issue they had was Malaria. According to, "The Health Risks of Living in Ancient Rome," Malaria grew most in puddles where mosquitoes bred. In the article, "The Health Risks of Living in Ancient" As more agricultural zones became swampy malaria spread throughout the empire. There was also a parasite widespread throughout the empire. As stated in the text, "Roman toilets may actually have been bad for public health," "Historical records show that farmers used human feces collected from towns to fertilize their crops." Human feces had parasites in them. The crops the Romans ate were invested with parasites because of the human fertilizer! According to, " Roman toilets may actually have been bad for public health," "The Romans cooked many foods, but they also favored a sauce called garum, which is made by fermenting pieces of fish and various seasonings under the hot sun". Because the fish wasn't cooked thoroughly under the sun, the fish tapeworm (parasites) stayed in the fish. As the culinary culture spread to the Roman Empire the parasites also spread. They also had a major problem the Romans didn't realize. As claimed in the article, "Did Lead Poisoning Bring Down Ancient Rome?," "High-born Romans sipped beverages cooked in lead vessels and channeled spring water into their homes through lead pipes." A disease the Romans has was gout caused by lead poisoning in their water. It was not deadly but could cause life-threatening complications.

Ancient Rome has experienced many health problems and had troubles with diseases including not only malaria but many other diseases. It has been around for countless of years, even when the ancient Romans were still alive and it is still in the world today! Millions of cases of malaria are still reported per year! As stated in the article "Malaria" it explains that in 2020, nearly half of the world's population was at risk of malaria. It also accords to saying that applying the methodology revealed that malaria has taken a considerably higher toll on African children every year since 2000 than previously thought. Which also means that malaria is effecting and spreading more as of today.

Another significant problem that led to Ancient Rome's downfall was its environmental problems. They had the problem of lead poisoning in the air. According to, "Toxic air pollution in Europe started with ancient Romans", "Lead is released by the smelting of a range of metallic ores, including those mined for copper and gold, tin, zinc, and silver, and from lead itself." They also smelted heavy metals. This polluted the air in many places in the Roman Empire. As stated in the article, "Ancient Roman air pollution caused climate change in Europe," "People also burned wood to heat their houses which released greenhouse gasses and soot." According to the article, "Deforestation during the Roman period," it stated, "With an ever-increasing population, the clearing of land for crops was a primary cause of initial deforestation." Since wood was used a lot in the Roman Empire for heating their homes and wooden fuel, that caused deforestation to grow more in the Roman Empire.

Today there are still many problems that had started from the past! One of Ancient Rome's biggest problems had involved poison including lead in the air, pipes, and even in their food! It was extremely toxic and lethal to them, which in turn had led to many deaths. As in accordance to "The Washington Post" it states that many lead pipes still exist today! It also explains that many people are in risk of dying because of lead poisoning. Conforming to "Alpha Publications" they clarify that in adults, lead poisoning can lead to cardiovascular and kidney failures. Another thing this website states is the impact of lead is insidious and is also being referred to as a silent epidemic. Furthermore, the article "Lead Poisoning by Water, and It's Prevention" had included many more risks of lead that are happening each year! The article incorporated that Harvard University Prof. Reid Hunt had reported cases of numerous amounts of people that had been caught up with lead poisoning by drinking water that had contained many different amounts of lead. Another major problem that is in the world today is greenhouse gases. Millions of people die from greenhouse gases each year. Apart from being one of the world's largest concern over each passing year, greenhouse gases continue to become an even larger problem. Most recently, it has been stated by "ABC News" that many greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and many other intoxicating gases have reached new records in just the past year. As determined by the "U.S Environmental Protection Agency", the article states that greenhouse gas emissions have been warming up the climate in record time almost catching up with the highest amount since 1958. The report has expressed countless numbers of records greenhouse gases have already passed. Many of them contain records that have not been met since the 1950's. Another article "The Independent" has also been determined that records have been passed by many of the main greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide, methane, and of course carbon dioxide. The latest problem that has been around since Ancient Rome is Deforestation. Another huge problem today as well! Deforestation has been getting worse over the past hundreds of years. A very recent article from "Financial Times" reports that a biologist and professor from the University of Brasilia explains that deforestation of the Cerrado contributes to the emissions that generate greenhouse gases and aggravates climate change. Which means the deforestation not only eliminates the home of many wildlife living in forests but also includes more problems such as climate change, greenhouse gases becoming even more toxic, and many more countless problems!

The Roman Problem of bad health and contaminated water most relates to SDG 3 of Good Health and Well-Being, it also relates to SDG 6 of Clean Water and Sanitation. The SDG 3 of Good Health and Well-being can be associated with the Roman problem of bad health. Many of Rome's health problems such as malaria, lead poisoning, and parasites relating to the 3rd goal. According to the video "

Understand Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being" states that "everyone deserves to be mentally and physically healthy." Even though some Romans didn't have good health, SDG 3 is a goal that could have helped the Romans in their time period. The Romans for their time were quite advanced, yet not as advanced as us so they couldn't have made cures for many of their diseases. Another Roman problem that most relates to one of the SDGs is SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation. It relates to it since the Romans didn't have sanitary water and had unclean conditions. That problem had a major effect on the Roman Empire which had a big effect on their downfall. Luckily, SDG 6 connects well to that problem because it aims to fix it! As in the title of SDG 6, it is to solve the problem of basic clean water and hygienic conditions for all!
