Part a)
Hirst AND Tang
- rhino horn drink
-

Fishies as passive observers of the death of the "lost love" who live on to tell the story even after the lover has died.
>>> There are many colorful fishies in the work swimming around the tank and around the lab coat and gynecologist's chair, sustained by the mechanical pump systems above the tank.

the fish represent society, which rarely cares about the small scale, personal events. The fish are still alive and swimming without knowing what their significance in the artwork is. They also don't know what the hospital chair is about. Also, they cannot see the significance of their place in the artwork as they are bound in the tank.

(Agree on the passive nature of the fishes. But what visual evidence suggests that someone has died?

Also, what evidence is there to suggest that the fishes represent society? This point seems far-fetched.)

in contrast with Hirst's other similar work - lost love (vs love lost)

Hirst:
-put forth the idea about death
-fishes are put in the tank swimming.
-the fishes are swimming and concealed in the tank, seemingly lost their way and is in a state of mere wonder
-the lost state of fishes is a form of spiritual death
-the way fish swims also looks like souls of the dead loitering in the surrounding.
-there is a surgery chair in the tank, signalling illness, which is a main cause of death.
- The empty chair leaves a sense of loss on the viewer as the people sitting on it is missing, which has a linkage to death.

(It is not clear how the death of fishes suggest spiritual death and also how they have lost their way. To what extent does the form of the work create such meaning of the fishes? That the empty chair leaves a sense of loss - any other visual evidence do you have to support this idea? For example, could the chair also suggest an abandoned situation? So which is more plausible based on visual evidence?)

Tang
-put forth the idea about animal protection
-rhinos are hunted for their horns, resulting in a depletion of rhino population.
-water bottles are used as they are man made materials, which portray the idea that man causes the loss of nature, fill nature with "human" features, disrupting the true form of nature.

(The last point is convoluted. Say it in your own words.)

Hirst:
- Dependence on technology
the live fishes in the tank are dependent on the oxygen pump to keep themselves alive, which could be connected to the modern reliance on technology to sustain life. What the pump means to the fishes is what the modern tech means to us.

(A plausible interpretation. The writing needs a bit of elaboration on the choice of hospital bed as subject matter and Hirst's take on modern medicine.)

- Fragility of death and life
Ultimately, all the fishes will eventually die, either due to the contamination of the water, or the lack of food.

The trapping of the fish within the container also suggests constraint. In modern times, patients are almost always constrained to the hospital room before they breathe their last breath.

(Can the 2 paragraphs go together to support the idea of fragility? Do you mean fragility of life or fragility of both life and death?)
