Health to me is the state of feeling good physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually rather than just being free of diseases and infirmity. I feel healthy when I spend time with nature and do the things I need to, without procrastinating as it makes me feel productive, which in turn, boosts my self-esteem.

The Nation's Favorite - Ema Datsi

Ema Datsi (pronounced Ae-ma Da-Tshi) is the national food of Bhutan and my personal favorite dish. Made with dried chili and cheese, the dish tastes best when served with white rice. Not only is it an easy dish to make but also very filling and appetizing due to its spiciness. I have also been told by my parents that the chili used in this dish helps regulate blood sugar levels and also boost circulation. Being away from home in an unfamiliar place all by myself for the first time, this dish makes me very nostalgic as the taste and smell reminds me of my family gathered around the dinner table, eating our food as we chat away.

The National Dress of Bhutan is gho for men and kira for women. This was introduced by a very significant religious figure known as Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the 17th century to give Bhutan a unique identity. Gho is a knee-length, robe-like cloth that is wrapped around the body and secured with a belt known as a 'Kera' while Kira is an apron-like ankle-length dress which is also secured with a 'Kera' and typically matched with two layers of clothing as tops known as 'Tego' and 'Wonju'. What makes our national dress unique is that both the Gho and Kira are hand-woven and they contain various intricate patterns.

From my perspective, while western medicine prescribes drugs for specific diseases and symptoms, traditional medicine focuses mostly on treating the person as a whole rather than just relieving them from their symptoms. A lot of herbs are used in our Traditional Medicine System, out of which, Khyenpa (Mugwort) is one of the most effective and abundantly found. Khyenpa is known best to stop bleeding from wounds when crushed into a paste and when diced and mixed with hot water, it is known to relieve stress and boost energy.

Music in Bhutan is an integral part of our culture and tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Like every other country, music is used to develop a context for verbal understanding. It is divided into three genres (Zhungdra, Boedra, and Rigsar) which range from traditional folk music to modern music. Some key aspects of it are religious music which include prayer chants and hymns, and Bhutanese instruments such as dramnyen and yangchen (string instruments) which are essential in both religious and secular music traditions. The annual Tshechu festival in Bhutan also features colorful mask dances and music that depict religious stories and legends.

Archery is the National Sport, and as a result, the most played sport in Bhutan. It was initially introduced in the country to serve as war weapons against Tibetan and British invaders. However, with the passage of time, it became a sport that is closely linked with our cultural and traditional beliefs. What makes archery in Bhutan so special and different is that it is played in almost every family gathering and religious events (such as Lunar New Year and Annual Rituals) in between villages where families and neighbors come together as one to cheer for the team representing their village. To add on, as drawing a bow takes a lot of energy, it helps burn calories and strengthens muscles in our arms and back.

People of different backgrounds and histories all come to healthcare centers to seek help and receive treatment. Initially, I had only a very vague idea of why and how clinicians and healthcare service providers must be respective of decisions made by the patients. However, after reading through Competency Standard 12, I have come to a realization that it is best to do some research on our patient's background just to save ourselves from unintentionally offending them and crossing boundaries. I have also learnt that there will be times when a patient's cultural beliefs clash with that of the healthcare service providers, and in such times, the choices that the patient makes must overweigh ours as they must have the last say in their healthcare choices. We must also actively reflect on ourselves so that there is little to no room left for culturally insensitive practices and also so that we gain the ability to provide the best care possible while overcoming prejudices.

Social Determinants of Health

A majority of people of different ages and backgrounds come to Australia in hopes of ensuring a better life. For these people, the social determinants of health are crucial elements that can profoundly affect their access to healthcare, their physical and mental health and overall, their quality of life. Due to problems such as unemployment and low wages, it makes it even harder for migrants, to be financially stable, which in turn affects their well-being. The sudden inflation in the rents of houses in Perth has brought about a lot of housing problems such as overcrowding, exposure to environmental risks, and lack of access to proper housing, especially in migrant/international students living outside their dorms. Additionally, people of certain nationalities may also experience racial discrimination and hate crimes, which can deeply affect their mental health.

References:
Module 3- Tackling the social determinants of health and workers and occupational health and safety.
