Be sure to read the paper "Chocolate with high cocoa content as a weight-loss accelerator" that is linked on Canvas.

Part of our job as scientists is to provide voluntary peer reviews of articles that have been submitted to journals to provide feedback on the scientific quality of the article. This week you will collaborate as a team of reviewers of the study on weight loss and chocolate. Based on what you have learned about data analysis so far in the course can you suggest any ways to strengthen this paper? Is there any important information missing? What is the N? Other demographics to note? Was the statistical analysis done appropriately? You do not need to wait until your team meeting to get started and you should return to the Padlet a couple of times through out the week to see what your teammates have said and to provide new comments.
I haven't provided question prompts this time. You should use text posts rather than videos this time unless you really want to use a video - go ahead. Photos illustrating your points are great too!
This assignment is worth 15 points. I'd like you each to make 3 posts at two different times this week (feel free to revisit more often) for 5pts each.

One thing I noticed is that the Giessen Subjective Complaints List has around 30 complaints. If the authors of the study did a test for each of them, then the likelihood of having a type 1 error occur is greatly increased. They probably should have done a bonferroni correction or something. (If they did, then props to them, but I don't think they mentioned doing so.)

Another thing I noticed was the authors mentioning that the chocolate eating group was more happy than the other groups. The authors said that it was due to the positive effects of chocolate on the body. But it may also be because the participants enjoy eating chocolate and are just happy to be prescribed chocolate by their doctor.

One suspicious thing I noticed about this paper is that they never actually mentioned the number of participants in the study. Furthermore, none of the graphs show data from individuals, only the aggregate statistics like mean and median. At least they didn't use bar graphs?

While the GSCL could potentially complicate research, it allows for more thorough research and also explores people's medical realities. If this study were done again, I wonder if there could be sub-groups within each of the 3 groups that control for how much of "subjective complaints" a person is feeling-that is, <.3, .4-.6 > .7-and do an analysis to determine how much a certain quantity of symptoms influences how an individual experiences a certain diet.

There's no direct mention of exactly how many people were tested, which seems very odd.

It seems like we could easily do an ANOVA analysis with the multiple groups, especially if demographic factors were considered as well.
