I had my classes get in small groups of 4-5 and create a "treatment agreement" poster, where they had to come up with 10 ways to specifically show respect in all these categories: 1. Teacher to Student 2. Student to Teacher 3. Student to Student and 3. Student to a Guest (Like a Substitute)

Then, they presented what they came up with and we voted on a poster to hang up on the wall!

Having students work in random groups helps to get them to know each other. I also have students do group shares of different topics (ex: something that made them happy in the past few days, whats your fav food etc.). I also am pretty open with my students about my life (to an extent lol) and it helps them be open with me.

I prefer to give them the option to sit where they feel most comfortable with the understanding that they will continue to have flex sitting so long they are being productive, staying on task, being respectful, and not causing distractions. I will assign seats and change them each quarter or as needed based on classroom behavior/student needs. Assigned seats will first consider those students with IEPs then randomizing the rest of the students. In an elementary school setting, I always greet students with a smile and when they approach me, I ask them, "hug or high five".

I also ask if they slept, ate, and how was their morning is going (you never know what they went through before they got to school). This gives me an insight on how their day will be like especially since I deal with students with behaviors.

for informal check-in's for the whole class i'll ask them a question where they can respond with a thumbs up, in the middle, or down. Then, ask the whole class what questions they have. For formal check-in's they can e-mail me and/or I'll do a google exit ticket every two weeks and every end of semester or quarter.

I'd like to say that I will great all of the students at the door, but I know that there will be many days that I will need to quickly finish work, go to the bathroom, or any number of things that will interfere with welcoming all the students at the door.

I'll provide a guiding question on the board to help cue students to what will be the day's theme. It will be Lesson related, but also currently in the news, wacky, or something to really noodle on.

When students are entering the class during passing period, I usually play music and the students know to put their phones in the phone caddy before the bell rings. I say hi as they walk in. I turn the music off when class starts. I have a friendly banter/conversation with the students about whatever -- new movies, anime, songs, laker scores, etc. This lasts about two, three minutes, before either starting with a warm up or silent reading.

I take attendance, and say their name multiple times. During class times, during stretch breaks, I'll go by and ask them to say their names. By the end of the second week, I have their names memorized.
