  • idioms can be confusing! be sure to explain their meanings so students gain understanding and will not take them literally
  • bring culture into the classroom so students feel included and can relate themselves to the content 
  • encourage classroom dialogue and have students engage in conversation (small groups are excellent for this)
  • longer response times
  • discuss word mechanics and different parts of words (suffixes, prefixes, base, root)
  • have students do daily reading and writing activities to practice and enhance skills
