The system used to identify social classes in Medieval Europe was called feudalism. It formed classes titled Monarch, Nobles, Knights, and Peasants. The classes were formed based off of land ownership. The Black Plague eventually caused the practice of feudalism to end, for the population of Europe and other places decreased greatly (Hirst 2018).

The Monarch class was the highest social class out of the four. The monarch or king would have monitored/owned all of the land in the country (except for the church) and would have had the ability to lease land to the nobles/barons. The king also had the power to withdraw any granted land from nobles. All judicial power was in the hands of the monarch (Hierarchy Structure 2018).

The baron/noble class was the second highest/wealthiest out of the four. The barons could be granted land through a lease from the king, but they had to take an oath to remain faithful to him. They were required to promise to serve the royal council, provide the king with knights to tackle, provide food and lodging locations to the king when they traveled, and pay the applicable rent and taxes. They had the opportunity to establish their own legal systems, set their own tax regulation schemes, and even design their own currency (Hierarchy Structure 2018).

The knights belonged to the third wealthiest class out of the four. They were lent land by the nobles in exchange for their military service for the king when needed. The knights were also called "vassals". The vassals were also supposed to protect the baron and his family when lent land. Knights were paid well, for their main job was to project the king. Another job they had was to keep part of the land they were given and distribute the rest amongst some peasants (Hierarchy Structure 2018).

The peasants belonged to the lowest and poorest social class out of the four in Medieval Europe. Other names for them were "villeins" and "serfs". Their job was to provide food and service to the higher classes when told. They were given no rights, unpermitted to leave the Manor without permission, and they had to get permission to marry from their Lords (Hierarchy Structure 2018).
