Section 1: African Americans were separated due to segregation. They were forced to different street cars, railway cars, eat in separate restaurants, attend different schools, and live in different neighborhoods. Segregation became legalized due to the Slaughter house cases. Some White politicians wanted to rule out the African Americans from voting. During the Jim Crow Era, African Americans were faced with great danger and violence. Section 2: The progressive movement sought to tackle social problems like poverty, unfair business practices, gender and racial discrimination. Black activists fought in the movement to improve lives and equal opportunities, including in education and the economy. W.E.B Du Bois and his young intellectuals formed an organization called the Niagara Movement, aiming to fight for equal rights for African Americans. Back in May 1919, Du Bois created a magazine in which the leaders of new organization could shared their views.

In Sections 3 and 4, I learned about the life African Americans underwent after moving to North and West. This move sparked many advances. African Americans moved because they were experiencing widespread discrimination in the South. Many of them were led by Benjamin “Pap” Singleton. Kansas was the state that many African Americans decided to settle down. These communities thrived and Singleton was even able to establish his very own colony, it was met with limited success. Many people in the West like Nat Love became big due to their success at providing more for their community. Armies like the Buffalo Soldiers became established after the Civil War, they became a prominent Army during this time. During 1898 the Spanish-American War arose. The Buffalo Soldiers further proved their abilities. The U.S. won as of a result of their perserverance. Great advantages that African Americans were able to keep was founding many Black colleges and universities. These colleges came to be the new term “HBCUs.” Many of which that contain sororities like Delta Sigma Theta and AKA. Many Black writers, poets, and scientists sprung during this period. Many of which included George Washington Carver, Madame C.J. Walker, and Paul Laurence Dunbar. m
