I don't think they are used to reading something so graphic. We had interesting conversations, to say the least. Sparked up many feelings. The subject of animal abuse was even brought up by one of my students. So overall, even though it was graphic, we used this chapter as a way to discuss our feelings and thoughts about the events that occurred in chapter 11. We'll be moving onward tomorrow, but something tells me we'll be faced with at least a few more heartbreaking scenes, unfortunately.

One called out, "Why did the author do that?" This led to a great discussion. We think this book offers a look at different perspectives. We see Pax who loves his human; he was cared for and loved. Where Bristle saw the danger. We get a view from different points of view and it is what makes this story special. Many felt the Farmer had other choices to protect his eggs and farm. There are traps that don't kill. He could find ways to protect his farm.
