Restatement of Thesis: Political activism, racial violence, hidden identities, and symbols of hate are themes that have all shaped the ongoing evolution of American’s identities. Summarization: Political activism can start with one person, like Patrice, and grow into a global movement, like Black Lives Matter. Racial violence has littered the United States’ history through bombings and shootings. Having to hide one’s identity in order to be safe, secure, and successful is something that many individuals face for reasons spanning from religious affiliation to sexual orientation. Symbols of hate are varied and are used to separate and intimidate others. Final Thought: While watching, it is easy to forget that BlacKkKlansman is a movie that is based on true events. Letting the comedic relief portions of the movie drive the storyline can distract viewers from the severity of the themes shown throughout. The producers may have known that as they put real, recent footage of these themes to remind viewers that although the story happened in the 70’s, these themes are alive and well today.
