  • Statues are solid forms that do not deal with social activities such as religion, culture, or nations. Instead, their “intention is to create solids the proportion of which are pleasing to the eye” and they “perpetuate among men the presence of a higher beauty.” (Gilson, 1966)
  • Sculptures are solid forms represent nature or what we experience in nature and tend to imitate it either through realism or abstraction. Aside from representation, we must also look at the different elements (lines, color,  contrast, rhythm, movement, mass, etc) and how they all contribute to the piece as a whole.
  • Sculptures make use of the materials being used. However, each kind of material such as marble, bronze, ivory, clay, or wood, has its own rules. Not all techniques (which are carving, modelling, casting, and assemblage)  can be applied to certain materials, for example, modelling cannot be used on marble. 
  • The Sculpture's form must be evaluated and taken within its given space and within a certain amount of time in order to appreciate its beauty. This is because the sculptor moves around the piece as he creates it as he views as a whole and not part by part.   
  • I am now able to distinguish the different sculpture from different eras. The statues during the Greek Classical sculpture, particularly during the style, Archaic, which has the kouros and kore statures. There was also the Hellenic and Hellenistic style which have developed draperies, natural stances, and developed draperies. Meanwhile, the Roman Classical sculptures heavily imitated the Greek sculptures however they are more personalized compared to the Greek. They also emphasized on the flaws on the face and in representations other than athletes and gods. The Renaissance sculptures revived the styles during Greek and Roman Sculptures. Notable artists are Michaelangelo, Donatello, and Robbia. There is also the Baroque style in which Bernini made significant pieces such as the Ecstasy of St. Theresa.

I am now able to asses and appreciate the sculpture’s form, material, techniques,  elements, and principles. However, I would like to learn more about the sculptures in today’s time and the significant pieces and sculptors that help shape it. I would also like to delve deeper about the techniques used (carving, modelling, casting, and assemblage) and learn more about the details of the different processes. I knew of the term abstraction since it is also applied to paintings and how they vaguely imitate art to the point where the subject represented is not clearly seen. I merely appreciated how lifelike the sculptures were made by the Greeks and Romans. I also only knew of one sculptor, Michaelangelo due to his famous works, particularly David.
