If you have a poor mentor then you must build most of that foundation yourself. Which will cause  you to have less time to expand your knowledge on the subject. For an example,  with every generation humanity builds off of it's previous generation or mentors to expand what is possible. Another possibility is that your mentor could be inexperienced them self and lead you to bad habits. Mostly positive, though. Through wisdom and experience, the student can learn many things and learn from the mistakes of the mentor and how to not be affected by them. A mentor is the best thing for an aspiring entrepreneur or just a regular person wanting to be better. 
A mentor can be a bad thing, too.  From only hearing one opinion you create an opinionated echo chamber and  you will only hear what the person says.
