The Day 1 workshop provided valuable insights into teaching methodologies and classroom dynamics. It highlighted the importance of using guiding questions in the syllabus to assess students' conceptual understanding and engage them in discussion. The workshop also highlighted the significance of asking "why" questions, which encourages students to explore the underlying principles behind their learning. This approach aligns with concept-based teaching principles, which foster a deeper understanding of the topic and critical thinking skills. The workshop also highlighted the importance of understanding the concept of conceptual understanding beyond mere facts and skills, enabling students to connect ideas and draw meaningful conclusions. The practical aspect of the workshop, involving word clouds and concept outlines, was also discussed. These tools help organize students' thoughts and responses, transforming abstract concepts into tangible visual representations. The Day 1 workshop has led me to reflect on method of teaching and the potential positive impact these strategies will have on my students' learning experience in my biology class.

Day 1 was very informative. It was discussed clearly the importance of guiding questions in emphasizing conceptual understanding of the contents. The command words such as explain, analyse, discuss that we usually used in AO2 and AO3 are more on aligned to essential questions for conceptual understanding. Likewise, if the main objective is more on factual understanding, it is likely that we guide students through alignment to assessment in AO1 command words like define, list and so on.
I am looking forward to new learnings in Day 2 and 3.

I have learned a lot from this workshop about how to design and implement effective teaching and learning strategies for IBDP Biology. Some of the key points that I have gained are:
• Concept vs Facts: I have learned the difference between factual and conceptual questions, and how to use them appropriately in different contexts. Factual questions are questions that have a single or narrow range of correct answers based on obvious facts or awareness, while conceptual questions are questions that have multiple possible answers, each being equally possible. Factual questions are useful for assessing students' recall and comprehension of basic knowledge and facts, while conceptual questions are useful for assessing students' application and analysis of concepts and theories. I have also learned how to create factual and conceptual questions based on the topic of Homeostasis, using relevant examples and criteria.
• Creating examination based on assessment objective: I have learned how to create examination questions that align with the assessment objectives of IBDP Biology, which are: (1) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of facts, concepts, and terminology; (2) apply and use knowledge and understanding of facts, concepts, and terminology; (3) construct, analyze, and evaluate hypotheses, research questions, and predictions; (4) demonstrate the personal skills of cooperation, perseverance, and responsibility; (5) demonstrate the manipulative skills necessary to carry out scientific investigations with precision and safety. I have also learned how to use command terms to indicate the level of cognitive demand expected from students in answering the questions, such as define, explain, compare, evaluate, etc.
• Creating scope and sequence based on the needs of the students where IBDP Biology requirements are still being followed: I have learned how to create a scope and sequence plan that covers the essential content and skills of IBDP Biology while also addressing the specific needs and interests of my students. I have learned how to use the syllabus roadmap overview as a guide to organize the topics and subtopics in a logical and coherent order, as well as to identify the learning outcomes, assessment statements, practical activities, internal assessments, external assessments, and links to TOK and CAS for each topic. I have also learned how to use the TSM as a resource to find relevant materials and resources for teaching and learning.

How teachers still have the authority to create their course outline they way they feel fit for their cohort. My take away for the day was also how the conceptual learning are interconnected with the factual learning. We want our cohort to comprehend the concept, and using the facts to argument/support their learning.
-Yulia-

However, even though I jumped straight to category 2, I am grateful because I got a facilitator who greatly facilitated every discussion, accommodating all the participants' queries. That really helped me learn a lot. Although I can consider myself with 0 knowledge with the IBDP bio (I only relied on reading guidelines for the past 1 month), but today I can say that I am not at zero anymore :) at least I understand deeper about conceptual teaching in Bio, its relation with scope and sequence, what changes need to be highlighted in the new syllabus (homework from my coordinator btw), scope and sequence, and best practices from other experienced teachers here. I'm so happy.

had a highly enjoyable and productive experience learning about the marking bands for the Internal Assessment (IA). The facilitator, Mr. Shameek, generously shared his expertise and insights, providing a comprehensive overview of the criteria and expectations for each band. I now have a much deeper understanding of how to assess IA work accurately and consistently.

The Collaborative Science Project (CSP) discussion was also stimulating and informative. I was pleased to have the opportunity to network with other IB science educators and learn about their experiences with the CSP. The insights shared by Mr. Shameek and the other participants helped me to identify several areas where I can improve my approach to the CSP.

Overall, I found the Marking Bands for IA Workshop to be an invaluable learning experience.
