  • Made an informed decision about pursuing graduate school (i.e. you didn’t decide the night before). 
  • Are motivated to pursue and complete your program, since it will help you achieve a career objective or in-depth knowledge on a specific topic. 
  • Have the research or professional aptitudes to pursue a graduate degree. 
  • Are able to write an opinion essay that is concise and to the point (excellent writing skills). 
Basically, its goal is to show that you are a good fit for the school and the program and that the university won’t be making a mistake by selecting you!

Don’t appear to be making excuses; remain positive in your explanation.   • Follow the program’s specific guidelines: Some programs will have word limits; some will require you to answer specific questions…whatever the requirements, make sure you follow them! 
  • Tailor your letter to each program you are applying to: Don’t write a general letter that you will use for each graduate program you are applying to, even if they are similar. Universities want to see that you have done your research and they want to know why you have chosen their program. Therefore, take the time to research the program as well as faculty’s research interests, so that you can demonstrate the connection between their program and your research and career interests. 
  • Ask for help: Show your letter to people you trust; professors are always a good source of knowledge! Do this well in advance so you have time to utilize their feedback. 
  • Be concise: Unless otherwise specified by the university, your letter should be no longer than one page, so make sure you get to the point early on! 
  • Proofread: Has this point been emphasized enough? It is such an easy task to do but when ignored, your application can be easily dismissed.

  • DON’T list money as your main motivation. 
  • DON’T look for pity or put yourself down. 
  • DON’T leave spelling or grammatical mistakes. 
  • DON’T use certain qualitative words (e.g: interesting, challenging, invaluable, etc.). without providing an explanation for them and putting them in context; you want to be specific. 
  • DON’T complain or make excuses for your circumstances. 
  • DON’T just list your achievements; give explanations, be specific. 
  • DON’T use clichéd answers (e.g.: I’ve always wanted to be a…). 
  • DON’T simply repeat what can be found elsewhere in your application. 
  • DON’T remind the university how well ranked or how amazing they are; they already know. Rather, find specific qualities of the program or university that attract you.
