VMP's Set

For the end of year gig i performed with the college band that i'm in (VMP) Vending Machine Panic. We played three songs as well as a fourth as an encore. The three songs were:

. Do I Wanna Know - Arctic Monkeys
. Beautifully Unconventional - Wolf Alice
. Everlong - Foo Fighters
. Optimistic - Original

I think on the night of the performance the songs went well and we performed them to a high standard. I think the songs had a good effect on the audience and was an enjoyable set for everyone and met the requirements of the evening.

During our performance we had a couple of technical and human errors, nothing major but noticeable enough for the audience. These errors included things such as:

. Jordan's (Guitarist) lead breaking before the second song:

before playing the second song "Beautifully Unconventional" Jordan announced that he had a problem with his guitar to the tech crew. we were soon on hand to sort the problem (which turned out to be a faulty jack to jack lead). Because he was laying through two pedals (a BOSS distortion and BOSS chromatic tuner) i thought it might have been the battery's as he was not plugged into a PSU.

. Molly's Vocals:

Halfway through the third song "Everlong", Molly's vocals just cut out and she lost her place within the song. Luckily someone was on hand with a bottle of water to give to her, plus me, Jordan and Kane carried on playing regardless of their being no vocals. After the song she was OK and able to continue for an Encore.

Apart from these small problems we played a good set and had a really successful performance.

How Successful Was The Process Leading Up To The Event (Rehearsals, Roles, Communication)?

in the run up to the gig the group as a whole organised the event really well, everything was carried out well and organised to a T. On the run up to the event the stage management team didn't really have much to do as far as organisation is concerned. Myself and Gifty did certain things to get ourselves prepared for the night.

As far as the meeting were concerned they all got carried out very well in a professional manner. There was the occasional time where the meetings were a bit thin on the ground and we didn't have many members but apart from that they were very successful.

Rehearsals at Magnet and Marco went well, we had a couple of times where we couldn't get things done due to either people not turning up or just not being a productive session. I feel like the practice for VMP went well as well as the practice with Yvie, Dan and Kane.

As far as roles are concerned i think that everyone carried them out in a very professional manner. Their were a certain few who didn't participate quite as much as they should have done maybe within their role. The Stage Management Group, On the run up to the event the stage management team didn't really have much to do as far as organisation is concerned. Myself and Gifty did certain things to get ourselves prepared for the night such as:

. Preparing set lists

. sorting lighting and sound equipment lists

. talking to the musical directors to establish who's on when and what songs they shall be playing.

On the night the stage management team worked really well to make the performances run smoothly, including changeovers and Soundchecks. Myself and Kane were on hand at the front row to make sure we could sort anything out if it was needed such as Microphone stands, D.I's into acoustic instruments, Etc. Gifty was at the back of the room making sure everything was ok with the sound and lighting techs and relaying any messages that they had for me or vice-versa.

As far as communication is concerned we had a few glitches and points where we couldn't communicate well with each other. This is where we could have improved. We had created a forum on which we could post any updates, questions, or general posts. We also posted on Facebook and used the group to the same effect.

Overall, this is how successful the process was leading up to the event.

Was The Team Effective?

I have been asked to look if the team was effective, for this question i shall be looking at the overall group as well as my individual stage management role & team.

The group as a whole:
in the run up to the gig the group as a whole organised the event really well, everything was carried out well and organised to a T. If it were down to me we would have started promotion earlier and made time for more practices for the real thing. Overall, the group worked well, and got on well with each other but more importantly got on with the event planning to make a great event that worked really well and fit the criteria.

On the night the group as a whole did really well, i think we all worked really well and did everything we needed them to do.

The Stage Management Group:
On the run up to the event the stage management team didn't really have much to do as far as organisation is concerned.
Did Everybody Contribute Individually?

For the event some people did contribute individually, however, there were some more than others. Not to name names but there were some that put 100% effort into this event, they used college time as well as personal time to help put on a great show and make a good event. They showed great commitment and wanted to help their fellow pupils and have a great show for everybody benefit.

BUT, there were a few people who didn't do so much and had a very laid back approach to the organisation and on the actual night. Some of these people left it down to everybody else and just did nothing. a few of these people were involved in important roles during the planning but left it down to other team members to take the grunt of their work.

So in answer to the question, yes people did contribute individually but not equally despite frequently being told that its important to contribute both for the benefit of yourself, your classmates and for the sake of your final grade, which the contribution goes towards.

How Could the Event Have Been Improved?

Although the event went well i think there could have been some things we could have improved on. These things aren't major changes but they're just things that we could have done to make the event that little bit better. These things include:

. Having more rehersals,
we should have had more rehearsals running up to the event as we had to change the running order TWICE on the week of the actual event. I think that a couple more rehearsals could have ensured that we got the running order fixed in place.

. Having a longer soundcheck,
I think we should have had a longer soundcheck on the night of the gig. We were told to arrive at 1:30pm and we didn't start sound checking till around 3:00pm, meaning we only had 2:30 for everybody to do a sound check. I think that if we had a longer soundcheck we could of had longer on getting the mixes in the monitors and the sound we wanted.

. In ear communication,
not an essential things but the stage management and event management team should of had some form of communication on the night so we could talk to each other in the event that we would need to.

. Better Leads,
Although the musicians were told to bring their own guitar leads, there was a couple of times where we had technical difficulties with all of the guitarists. This was due to faulty leads, and at one point somebody moved the master volume on one of the fender amps so it was coming out too loud and not as it was in the sound check.

Apart from these things i don't think that anything else could have been improved. i think that the event went well and we put on a good show as we intended to do.

Marketing Campaign: What Went Well?

What Went Well?
as far as marketing is concerned i didn't have much interaction with the marketing/promotion team but it doesn't mean that i didn't keep in contact with them and see what was going on "behind the scenes" if you will.

during the marketing we did some things well and got some things done that i thought we were never going to do. First of all, i thought that we wouldn't get posters out on time and that we wouldn't get chance to get them printed. however, we just managed to get them done out put them on notice boards around notts.

we also got to promote the event on our own social media by sharing the page that we created and the event that we created, by doing this it means that we could reach a wider audience and manage to spread the slam jam to different people

Overall, i think that we did lots of things well when we did the marketing and the promotion. i think that we organised the event well and managed to share it at a decent time before the event.

Marketing Campaign: What Went Wrong?/What Could Have Been Improved?

What Went Wrong?
As far as marketing is concerned we have had little or no set backs or things that went wrong. I wasn't part of the marketing team but i tried to keep an eye on what they were doing and what progress they were making. I think that their team was doing a good job in organising the promotion and the general marketing.

There was only one thing that i had a slight concern about during the whole marketing campaign. It was the fact that the posters went out Two weeks before the gig. Because of this i was worried that we wouldn't get many members of the audience or general public.

As far as social media is concerned: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Etc. that was very successful and launched around a month before the actual event. We also set up an eventbrite page on which we could see how many people had booked tickets. we were quite shocked when we saw that we had 117 tickets booked, naturally not all 117 turned up due to unknown reasons but we still had a good turn out of around 90 people.

the other bad thing that happened is that we missed the budget so if we had to buy anything then it would have to come out of our own pockets.

What could have been improved?
I have already kind of touched on this above but their are a couple of things that i would have improve if i were in charge of the marketing campaign.

These things would include:

. Releasing the posters/social media earlier to ensure the viewers have got/seen the promotion for as long as possible.

. having more interaction with relevant groups to let each other know whats going on as far as marketing is concerned.

Overall, these are the things that went wrong and that could have been improved. I don't think these things are too major and they didn't effect the preparation for the event.
