For my project I chose to create an infographic editorial piece exploring the empowerment of women and girls in the context of climate change. It has been proven that environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes increase when more women are in positions of power; and women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work is allowing us to create more aggressive climate change policies. 

The article, Data point: Climate change is a feminist issue, is from the Economist The Sustainability Project,  “a new model combining insights, innovation and influence to convene and actively engage global stakeholders with the power to effect real change” (The Economist 2021).

Using the information in the article I created an infographic to visually tell the story.

I wanted to contextualize a visual method for exploring the intersectionality between feminism and climate change. I also wanted to play with the form of the infographic in order to explore material consciousness, in that way I could try to push myself as one of my practical future outcomes is to experiment in the blending of digital and traditional media. 


I started by reading the article and noting the important topics. I then got off the computer with my notes and did an abstract painting using watercolor and gouache. By leaning into colors and shapes. I tried to dig into the topics of the article using the most basic of forms. I often find that I can get very burnt-out and uninspired by working only on screens. This was the first time I had done a process like this and I really enjoyed where it took me.

The purpose of the illustrations is to capture the attention of an interested young audience that may not have their interests piqued by text alone. It will be presented through the author's research Instagram page and direct readers to a link to the whole paper. It is a mix of digital and analogue techniques. It’s also a set of rules for me as an artist and human to stay grounded:
1 Breathe in
2 Find a story
3 Breathe out
4 Catch the story
5 Repeat 

The project is inspired by the poem ‘Breath’ by Adrian Rice, which describes a woman breathing in some of her partner’s last breaths which had been caught in their child’s birthday balloon as one of the last things he did was blowing them up. 

I also wanted to explore playfulness in catching and communicating stories, to balance out that sometimes stories can be hard to hear and feel. 

I played with video and then situated it as a customer demo in digital Ikea-style instructions (the irony in this world of needing a step by step on how to breathe). They were then printed out with ink errors and watercolour breath line was painted on by hand. The instructions are then presented within a hand drawn illustration of two generations of a family following the instructions to catch their stories.
