This small counseling group will support Hispanic high school juniors and seniors who will be the first in their families to pursue higher education. The group will focus on college and career exploration, introducing students to various post-secondary pathways, including universities, community colleges, and trade schools. Through guided discussions and activities, students will develop resilience, build a growth mindset, and address common fears and self-doubt associated with being a first-generation student. The group will also equip students with effective communication strategies to help bridge the gap between their aspirations and their family's understanding of higher education. The goal is to empower students with the confidence, knowledge, and skills to navigate their post-secondary journey successfully.

Stage 1- I will begin with icebreakers and team-building activities to foster trust, creating an inclusive and respectful environment. Together, we will establish group norms, emphasizing confidentiality, respect, and active participation while clarifying its limits, including mandatory reporting. Students will identify a personal future goal and learn about SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) to structure their aspirations. They will share their goals to build accountability and peer support. To measure progress, students will complete an initial self-assessment survey using Google Forms, providing baseline data for growth throughout the sessions.

Stage 2- Sessions will include interactive discussions, self-reflection, and hands-on activities to ensure productive and cohesive sessions. Students will review transcripts, understand GPA, class rank, and graduation requirements, and align them with their goals. They will complete sections of the ApplyTexas application, draft college essays, and engage with guest speakers on post-secondary options. Self-assessments, group discussions, and role-playing exercises will strengthen self-advocacy, ensuring students stay accountable and motivated.

Stage 3- For closure, I will conduct a pre- and post-evaluation survey using Google Forms to assess student growth and experiences. Responses will be automatically compiled into a Google Sheets file for data analysis, including calculating averages and standard deviations and identifying common themes. The final session will focus on reflecting on progress, discussing the following steps, and reinforcing the importance of maintaining confidentiality beyond the group’s end. Additional follow-up resources will be provided to ensure continued support.

A participative (democratic) leadership style is most effective with first-generation high school juniors and seniors. This approach fosters engagement by encouraging students to share their perspectives while providing guidance and support (Verywell Mind, 2019).

First-gen students often face unique challenges in navigating post-secondary options, so creating an inclusive environment where they feel heard and valued can boost confidence and motivation. By balancing structure with collaboration, students take ownership of their goals, build self-advocacy skills, and develop a sense of belonging, ultimately enhancing their commitment to the group’s objectives.

Instillation of Hope: First-generation college students may have doubts about their ability to succeed in higher education. The group setting can provide hope by demonstrating that others have successfully navigated similar challenges. The faith that the treatment or counseling process can be effective is crucial for building their confidence in their ability to succeed in the future.

Universality: Many first-generation students might feel isolated in their struggles, especially when dealing with challenges that their peers might not face. Universality helps them see that they are not alone in their experiences, which can reduce feelings of alienation. They may find comfort in knowing others are facing similar issues and working towards success.

Imparting of Information: This is particularly important in a school counseling context, where students may need information about higher education, career options, mental health, and managing stress. Educating students about these areas can empower them to make informed decisions about their future.

Altruism: Encouraging students to help one another in the group through sharing experiences or offering advice fosters a sense of usefulness and connection. Helping others can increase their self-esteem and a sense of community, which is valuable in navigating the stresses of being a first-generation college student.

Development of Socializing Techniques: Many first-generation students may face challenges socializing in environments where their peers have different experiences. The group setting provides a safe space to practice and develop interpersonal skills, making it easier for them to connect with others in school, work, and later in college.
