15 - T - Lee built up the reader's emotions by including intense moments like Scout running up to Atticus while the kids are sneaking around, Jem being man handled by one of the men and other junctures leading up to Scout's scene where she talked the men down. This is significant because Lee demonstrates her consistent style of writing by 'dropping' the reader after coming to a climax. Now, the reader can predict that this scene will be brought back and be important later in the books.

Atticus previously said that people need to stand in someone else's shoes to fully understand their perspective.

Lee is showing further that Jem is becoming more and more similar to Atticus in this chapter with how he is being extremely involved in the way that he is watching the trial progress. Jem is constantly showing with his demeanor and body language that he is either happy about what is going on in the case or is not. The way that Jem watches the trial is similar to how a normal kid would watch a baseball game, and it shows how much Atticus has influenced Jem and how much he has learned from him and taken a liking to his career.

He asks Mr. Ewell why he did not call for a medic when Mayella was hurt, and asked Mr. Ewell to write something (so he could then see that he was left handed).
