Mr. Jenson my fith grade teacher. When I was in the 4th grade I had an abusive teacher. He physically abused the boys and emotionally abused the girls. I quit being a baton majorette that year because he would walk up to my desk pretending to twirl a baton holding my multiplication test with a big fat red F on it for everyone to see. Mr. Jenson knew we had been abused by this teacher and nurtured us and helped us heal. I remember every book he read to us. The Incident on Hawk's Hill, The Great Brain are two of my favorites. He passed away five years ago. I honor him by rereading those books every now and then.

Throughout all my years in public school, I have had many teachers that have created a huge impact on my life. There are many teachers that stand out to me who created an impact on myself while I was a student, but there is only one teacher who has created an impact on who I am outside of being a student. I still talk to many of my high school teachers and administrators regularly, but there is only one teacher who I consider a close friend. Andy Shamblin is the teacher who I believe has been there for me during school and after school. I never realized this until this past week. One of my close friends from high school passed away suddenly last Sunday. She was a student here at WVU. Even though she I and many of her friends are not students at our high school, Andy was there texting, calling, and supporting us through this hard time. He organized a candle lighting service on Wednesday to honor her passing and he brought a smile to all of our faces. I talk to Andy over text message and I know I can always rely on him for advice, a laugh, and to just be my friend. He has showed me that teachers not only are role models, but they are also some of the best friends you can have.

Throughout all of my years in school, I have had many great teachers. I have had some bad ones too but the good teachers definitely outweigh the bad. Donna Curry was my fifth grade teacher and she was one of the best I had. Now that I am older, I realize how great she was and how truly amazing she was at her job. I remember being such good friends with everyone in my class and that is because she implemented strategies to allow everyone to get to know each other. Also, I remember her handling a student with a learning disability in such a great manner. He was having an outburst and I remember her calming him down so easily and comforting him rather than yelling and upsetting him more.

My favorite teacher ever was my history teacher sophomore year, Mr. Miller. I was the type to never answer questions and just sit in the back in silence until his class. He would bully the life out of me just to get me to talk and I honestly loved it ahah. I wasn't a big history person but he made class so up beat at 7am that I wanted to learn and be there. After his class ended, I would always stop in a say hi every day, and when I was having a bad day he would cheer me up. I also had the opportunity to be handed my diploma by him.

My favorite teacher I had was my fourth-grade teacher, Mr. Badgley. He taught math, and I was not very good at math before his class. Math as a whole always intimidated me, and I never was confident in myself. This year I remember math becoming my favorite subject because of him. He made learning fun, and he made sure we really understood the concepts. He also ensured that we believed in ourselves and had confidence. One day specifically I remember him pulling me aside after class and telling me how bright I was, and he wished I was as confident in myself as he was in me. From that day forward I worked on my confidence, and it was because of him. He taught me it is okay to believe in yourself without being cocky. He made a real impact not only on my academics, but my life!

My favorite teacher ever was my second grade teacher. I had known her since I was in pre-k because she was my brothers teacher. This meant I had known her and had a good relationship to her prior to second grade. This is the teacher that actually influenced me to become a teacher myself. She always pushed me and expected a lot out of me, even though it was only second grade. This is because she saw so much potential out of me and knew I could excel. She mostly encouraged me with my writing. She was really convinced that I would become a writer. Because of her I would go home and write stories all the time. She is also the teacher that introduced me to poetry, and I have had a love of poetry ever since. I don't think if it was for this teacher I ever would have considered becoming a teacher myself. The way she ran her classroom made school so much fun and made me excited to be the adult one day.

As a student I was always very talkative and outgoing. I always had something to add to the conversation, even if it had nothing to do with the class subject. Mrs. Rexroad was my 2nd grade teacher who I honestly didn't always get along with. I can imagine I was a handful so that is valid though. She came up with this amazing idea to better the classroom function between her and I. She came into class one day with a blank notebook that had my name on it. She told me that any time I had a story I wanted to tell during class, to write it down and give it to her at the end of the day instead of interrupting the class. I did exactly as she said and every night she would take the book home and write a response to my story. I have never forgotten how special that made me feel, that instead of just dismissing me, she actually found another way that my voice could be heard.

I had always loved school, but she was the first teacher who made me excited to come to school every. single. day. I still think about her classroom management and have thought about using it in my classroom. My favorite thing she would do is read aloud books. Not just any book, but specifically the pigeon books by Mo Willams. She would read each character in a different voice and we would laugh and laugh until we couldn't anymore. She would laugh with us and you could genuinely tell she enjoyed her job. I already have all of the pigeon books I can find and hope to do her voices justice in my own classroom someday.

My third grade teacher, Mrs. Raymond, was my favorite teacher. She had been a long-term sub since the beginning of the year. She loved all her students just like her own. Shortly through the year, she began to realize I was struggling with my school work. She then continued to keep a close eye on me and see how I was doing. As she noticed I was still having a hard time, she began reviewing my work with me and going over the content I did not understand. We then decided it would be best to contact my parents and inform them that I had been struggling with my classwork. I was extremely determined and wanted to do my best but could not understand why I was still not receiving the outcomes my peers had. That is when Mrs. Raymond then offered to tutor me for free after school for a few hours each week. During this time, she would go over that past week's content and help me better understand it. This was only the beginning of my experience of schooling. It was only going to progress and get more challenging from there. I then moved on to the fourth grade and then to the fifth grade. It was not until then that another teacher recognized I was struggling greatly in her class. This was Mrs. Wisoki and she was the sweetest soul. She then asked me to have a meeting with my parents and they did. She began to explain the areas I was struggling in and it all fell back to my reading skills. She recommended I be evaluated for a learning disability. I proceeded to do so and got my results back, explaining that my reading fluency was the area I was struggling in. Then she began working with me as my third-grade teacher did. These two women changed my life. They inspired me to be who I am today.

From her morning greetings to class engagement through super fun activities, she is someone who I want to emulate when I start teaching! Mrs. Adee always encouraged us to do our best and made sure to spend time getting to know all of her students personally. What I remember most about her was how much she prioritized the Golden Rule in our classroom to make sure that we were treating our peers with respect and positivity at all times. If I could be half of the teacher that she was, I would know for sure that I have made a positive impact on my students.

My favorite teacher I ever had was a science teacher I had in 5th and 6th grade. At first she was considered a very tough teacher with the way her class was set up. She expected you to do the right thing and be a good student. While a little intimidating at first as the two years went by I slowly understood that she was teaching this way to set us up for success down the line. I remember one day the class found out her mom passed away and before that she did not seem right. I remember that both her 5th and 6th grade class rounded up some money and gave her a gift because everyone felt the same way I did as a teacher. Tough love as a student teacher relationship at that age is hard to understand, but as I got older I understood exactly why she did that. To make us better students down the line.

I was never good at history and struggled in his class. He continued to push me and I'll always remember reciting the amendments 100 times infront of him until I got all of them correct. I also remeber telling him that I struggled taking tests and quizzes. Every day during study hall, he would come and get me and bring me into his classroom and gave me tips on how to study for exams and what to do when I was taking them. he was also very personable and I talked to him about everything. He helped me through a lot and I am forever grateful for him. He is the reason why I wanted to get into education! My favorite memory with him was when we had a team for a charity volleyball game and all of us never stopped giggling and smiling the whole time. He was the absolute best.
