The poem is a mix of anger at his parents’ ignorance and desire to be in a relationship with a boy at school, poignantly summing up the adolescent jumble of emotions that he felt when coming to terms with his sexuality. She is initially dependent on telenovela tropes to create a vision for what life should look like. She sees the only purpose in life as being to fall in love with a man. This creates this image of men as romantic heroes and women as uniquely submissive to men. This changes when she marries Juan Pedro because he isn't a handsome or romantic man, unlike the men portrayed in telenovelas. He is abusive and destroys the idea that she has of a passionate love affair between men and women. Her perception of women also changes when she meets Felice, a woman who helps her escape Juan Pedro. Chiron doesn’t talk very much, and often does not respond when he is spoken to, especially in situations where he feels uncomfortable. Because he does not have a safe home, he feels constantly guarded, which comes to fruition in his reluctance to speak. Instead, Chiron communicates with others in different ways. When Juan takes him to the beach, they connect through the physical act of Juan holding Chiron in the water, making him feel a sense of safety and security. Another example of an alternate form of communication that Chiron uses is with Terrell. Trujillo makes the point that the Virgin is not only an important symbol in Chicano culture, but represents family and motherhood, which is not something exclusive to heterosexual women. In the writer’s note, Trujillo also includes a controversial take on the Virgin de Guadalupe, from her point of view as a lesbian. Though Aunt Jennifer is an artist and has passions of her own, she remains in her abusive marriage until she dies, forever cementing the memory of her as an oppressed wife. “Power” is a poem about Marie Curie, detailing her untimely death caused by radium poisoning.
