An action I would adopt to empower the voices of students who are a Newcomer to my school is to view each student as an individual. By doing this, I avoid homogenizing newcomer students as one group and instead make note of each and everyone’s unique strengths. For instance, if I notice a student has a particular strength (athletic, hands on), I will ensure that I will make that strength shine through. This provides students confidence, and this is especially important when a student is learning a new language as their confidence can be at an all time low. Also, with an increase of confidence, students feel more comfortable to contribute more to the class. You feel part of the group when you can contribute and gain other students’ interest and respect. By viewing each student as an individual and by highlighting their strengths, this provides students with the ability/confidence to tackle challenging situations.

I will make a conscious effort to focus on creating a learning environment that celebrates who my newcomers are and where they come from. I want representations in my classroom in the form of pictures, words and art that help my newcomers feel at home. Pictures from their culture and words in their native language. I want the classroom to reflect them.

One way that I will empower the voices of Newcomers is by connecting with the parent community. I would provide them with monthly newsletters (in multiple languages) with information about our school, the Ontario Curriculum, community services, any special events and Canadian customs. I would like to encourage parents to come to the school, volunteer with events and student learning, welcome them and provide them with a community within the school.
- Angela Perna Alati

My goal is to be an intentional as I can while planning, implementing, and organizing my room and space for next year. My goal is to be intentional when I plan meetings with the interpreters and the parents; I want to get these meetings done in September within the same time frame as "Meet the Teacher" nights. I think if I change my headspace to being intentional when I plan, it will benefit more than just my ELL's. I will intentionally scaffold even the smaller activities and I will make sure that the independent work is reachable and attainable. I would like to be intentional with my physical space as well. I would like to incorporate more languages and translated anchor charts in the room/ or translated words within anchor charts. I would like English to come to life in my class but I would also like other languages to come to life in our welcoming community.
