I want to study gender and media because I am confused with the gender status in these days, is women still in a weak position? Why some women will take their gender as a disadvantage to order men to do things? And if someone give a woman some welfare to a woman only because she is a woman, Is this discrimination? So I start to watch documentary about women, about feminism and women’s right, now I gradually realize why and what should we flight for it, that helps me to make a clear future plan. I was used to not confident to speak English, this situation got improved since I got here, but I still felt stressful when someone shows confused after hearing what I said, it would make me nervous to repeat my words, and if I change a way to express the same meaning, my word would be stuck. But since I started to do shadowing, the situations that someone shows confused are fewer, and if I have to change a way to say, I will be much fluent. Because of the coronavirus, I have to stay at home and watched some movies, they help me develop some movies knowledge, and teach me use to different way to watch movies.

I am interested in photography, but not good at it. When I was during lockdown, going out occasionally is valuable. If a people stay at home for a long time, everything outside is beautiful. So when I go out during that time, I found the beauty that I couldn’t usually find, the shape of a building, the wild flowers, not to mention the sunset. I think we should focus more on something around us, sometimes they are too close so we ignore them. And I also learn how to see things objectively, everyone have thinking abilities but not everyone know how to use it, thinking indecently is a powerful ability.

I think shadowing is really helpful, I think I will keep doing that in the future, it will be happy to “listen” my progress. Thinking independently is also the skills I should develop in the future, it will help me to deal with the information from the Internet, and not trust unknown information at will. I also need to develop my writing skills, not only my vocabulary is poor but also I am not good at write long sentences, maybe I should read more articles and mimic their sentences, I should start with the major I am interested in, and I can also write down the good sentence on articles. I have the habit of extracting lines from TV serials and movies, so maybe articles should be part of them. Management is still a big problem, I need to learn how to arrange my day, I can take a rest a day if I feel tired, but I shouldn’t take a rest everyday, I guess self-control is the important part of it.

My AES tutor Yulia said my speaking is weaker than other objects, and based on my research, shadowing is a good way to improve oral English. So I choose one of my favorite TV series How I Met Your Mother as my follow-up material.
The first time is much harder than i thought, at first I think it just follow the actors and say their lines, like ordinary talking, how difficult could it be. Then I realize it's not easy to imitate the characters' accent, tone and speed of speech. Unlike daily talking, the TV series lines contain long sentences, and the elision sometimes confused me. Well, I still need more practice, it's just a beginning.

The second time is still difficult, it's hard to follow the characters especially there are many characters in this part, different characters have different tone, accent, and feeling, it's really hard to change in short. I choose this part because the five main characters all spoke in this scene, and I found it interesting that the difficulty of imitating them is different. For me, Barney is the most easy one, because his tone is very obvious and I can predict how it will change. And Lily is the most difficult, her voice is soft and the character is emotional and drama, I can't keep up with her several times. But I think I found a little trick, I should focus on the stress and light tone in their lines, it could be easier.

cwas Video chatThis is a Chinese documentary, I watched the Episode 7, A Migrant Dream. It's about people in rural area want to work in Shanghai. People in this documentary are all low-educated and low income, some of them may even haven't lifted out of poverty. What impressed me most is Wang Yinhua, a women with two children and a husband leg problems. Her family sells tobacco leaf to make a living, their income can just enough for food and clothing, so she wanted to go to Shanghai to work. But her families though she should't go, her husband can't take care of the family and her daughter needed her company. She gave up this opportunity first but she showed up in the train to Shanghai eventually. Her job in Shanghai is a care workers in a nursing home. She faced lot of challenges in the beginning, she didn't understand what the old people said, she couldn't remember patients' names and illness, her helpless in a new environment is really real and impress people. What impress me most is the scene that Yinhua went to Shanghai Bund and had a video chat with her daughter. It was her first time to see a such prosperous city so did her daughter. They said seven times "beautiful" during the video chatting, and I saw light in their eyes, Yinhua promised to her daughter that she will pick her daughter to Shanghai in two months, it seems like hope was surrounding them. I used to think left-behind children was pitiful because they lost their parents' accompany, but that's not their parents' will. If they have choices I think they also want to watch their children grow up and earn money. Working in big city is not easy, but that's the only way to make a brighter future for their children, so that their children can make choices, and not live like them. This is their responsibility and their motivation.

A very classical Wong Kar Wai style movie, frame lost, meaningless narration and psychedelic colors. I am not a fan of him so sometimes I am confused of this scene, but Wong Kar Wai is really good at telling simple story in an not boring way. The first story is about police officer and killer, but I think the drug drug trafficking scene is interesting. If this is a Hollywood movie, there must be lots of fire and fight, but Wong Kar Wai only focus on how they transfer the drugs. It's tricky because he could avoid the big scene and he was smart to add his style in this story. The second story seems like a love story but I think it is creepy. the role acted by Fei Wong fall in love with the role acted by Chiu-Way Leung, so she stole his house key, sneak into his house and change his home decoration. Wong Kar Wai used his style to make this kind of thing not strange, or even let audiences thought Fei Wong was lovely, I guess that's why Wong Kar Wai is Wong Kar Wai.

This part is a few difficult than before, because the emotions change fast, and the pauses between lines are short, I need to change my emotion quickly, and all the characters in this scene were emotional, especially Barney, it's hard to shift the emotion when speaking his lines. And this time I try to mimic the characters' action when speaking their lines, and I think it is helpful, gestures and body move can make me more easier to remember the lines, and catch the feeling. The speed of lines is also a big problem in this scene, some lines are fast because the roles were agitated, some lines are slow because the role was gritting teeth, it is hard but interesting. After listening the audio this time, I think I have made a little progress, now I can speak the lines more clearly and there are fewer cases of not being able to keep up.

I watched this movie because this is a classical Bollywood movie and we studied Bollywood that week. I am really interested in India since I watched Sense 8, especially their marriage culture, do a Indian woman have to follow their parents' order and marry a Indian man? What happened if she refuse to marry? DDLJ answered my questions. At first I thought it was just a cheesy love story, they fall in love, something break them apart, she get back together and happy ever after. Well this is DDLJ's story, but the movie tells me something deeper than that. I think Raj was actually a traditional man, though he was born and raise in the UK, and he seems not serious enough, he was still follow Indian tradition. When he fell in love into Simran and Simran had to marry to another man, he decided to merry her with her parents' permit. Even Simran' mother allowed them to elope, Raj insisted to marry Simran in a traditional way. I think it is traceable because Raj respect everyone, even Simran's little sister and her unmarried aunt (I guess women keeping single at certain age in India is not decent). That explain why Raj wanted Simran's father permit so much. Anyway, DDLJ gives me a now way to think about Indian marriage policy, and the status of Indian women.

This documentary reminds me of a book I used to read, it is called Half of The Sky. This documentary shows nine girls' life from different countries. And they all faced different encounters. Some of them didn't have opportunity to get education, some of them even have to get married at 11. They be treated unequally on because of their gender. I really love the story of the Afghan girl, though she suffered a lot, she still be brave and flight against the world. She don't want to marry a stranger at the age of 11, so she leave home and flight back. Her future might be tough, but there will be hope. After watching this documentary, I realize there are so many tragedies that we couldn't see, women in different face different inequality. Feminism is a war for women, and there is no need to negotiate and compromise with men. There are too many different forms and demands of women rights, but each kind of women rights is to fight for all women. You can be gentle or radical, but you cannot be silent.

This journal is a reference of my AES essay. My previous major was engineering, the difference between the number of boys and girls was very large. The total amount was 60 people and there were only 7 girls. Even my roommate at that time thought it was a male major and not suitable for women. So I wonder what cause this? Why engineer should be only suitable for men? It is because men are smarter? I don't think so. Maybe it is because men‘s brains are more rational? That's baloney. This journal answer my question, it said that women get less reward and salaries in engineer field, it is like a vicious circle. The public think women are not good at doing engineer, so they pay women less than men, so fewer women want to work in engineer. The public see fewer women in engineer, they could be even certain that women are not good at this. But there are no evidences that women cannot be as good as men in engineer field, so this prejudices and bias are all based on the gender stereotypes.
