This is the part of the story when they are living in the old train depot. Jeannette is talking about the trains going by but I think it applies to the whole book. In every part you can see how the Walls children got use to each obstacle they faced. They got used to being hungry and learned how to scavenge. When they were in Welch they got used to being cold and learned to hunt for sticks to keep the fire going, and how to collect fallen coal, and how to use kerosene to keep a small fire. Mom pretends to be anti-sentimental for her kids, but realistically she doesn't care about others' feelings and doesn't want to get in a fight with Rex. She wishes she could be like Quixote and escape and be wild. It's "more fun" to her. Her kids don't agree with these views, as is shown with Brian and how he holds the dog extra tight.

Lori let herself get paddled even though she did nothing wrong so her siblings wouldn't have to get hurt. She sacrificed herself for them without hesitation. This is an example of Lori being an amazing role model and older sibling. This shows Rosemary's attitude towards her children and her perspective on life. Rosemary could not bring her self to understand why a young girl would be upset that her childhood pet was discarded through a moving car window. I think that this is a very good representation of J's early life. She lived a life that at any point could go very badly. She always had to be aware at every moment if anything went wrong, even when she was very little. The fact that she always knew that this sort of thing would happen kept her alert and aware of her situation. This quote was also towards the start of the book, when the hotel that they were staying in caught on fire. Jeannette says this to herself in the middle of the Welch chapter when things are at their worse. This is proove in context that she directly states that growing up the way she did empowered her to be successful. This is proof of this and even proposes that if she didn’t grow up the environment that she did she wouldn’t have ended up the same way she did.
