Amir had to live with and carry around the “thorny old barbs of guilt” for his actions towards Hassan (202). The pain that he felt for the memories that he continuously tried to suppress, haunt Amir throughout the novel. Knowing that he witnessed the assault of his dearest friend and didn’t do anything to stop it is what kept him awake at night and gnawed at his soul and wellbeing.

Another thing that Amir had conflict with was his desire for approval from his father. As a child he described the way he wanted his father to know “once and for all that his son was worthy” (56). He always just wanted his father to be proud. Even as an adult he describes how happy he is when his father was proud of his high school graduation, and how he was “wishing he could have seen [him]” when his book was published (183). Because of the lack of connection he had with his dad, he always desired love and sought after it which was a huge trouble for him.

Amir reflected the guilt and fear that many people have when it comes to their actions in dire situations. The lesson that Amir taught us was that self-forgiveness is extremely important. No one is defined by their past and their mistakes and though necessary to do good to redeem yourself, one must also accept that as people we grow and change. This book taught many different lessons, and overall was both heartbreaking and uplifting. All of us enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend to others. It taught important information about the crises and terror in Afghanistan, as well as valuable lessons that shed light on the darkest parts of the human conscious. In addition the book captured our attention and made it an amazing book worth the read, especially if you want to cry.

The novel introduces Amir in 1975 in Kabul, Afghanistan. During the story, the Soviet-Afghan War begins (in 1979) and ends (1989), which terrorizes his home in Afghanistan. During the war In 1996 the “Taliban rolled in” to Afghanistan and began unspeakable terrible violence against the people of Afghanistan, like Hassan and his family (213). Though he moved to America in 1983, he had to face the Taliban while rescuing Sohrab, and their destruction caused the death of the people he loved. In America he lived in an area full of “Afghan families” who had escaped the war, which is where he met his wife (137).

Amir is a very complex character and it’s noticeable that his actions other than his words express his feelings. Baba is someone Amir absolutely adores. Throughout the story the actions he would conduct showed his love for Baba. Everything he did was to please and get approval from his father. For example in the beginning of the story he states “And that right there was the single greatest moment of my twelve years of my life, seeing Baba on the roof, proud of me at last” (66). Although he directly stated that, the moments before he was doing the kite run to please his father. He would beat himself up to win just, just so he can see his Baba proud of him. Another person he cared deeply for was his the person he “wished...had been my father” was Rahim Khan. Rahim Khan was always there for Amir when he needed him. He was easy to please and would always “rescue” him when he needed it. Although he adored Baba, he wasn't always treated the best by him and Rahim Khan would step in and fill that empty void. In addition ever since was a kid he enjoyed writing and had been writing since a young age. Just like many others they would use their traumatizing experiences and write about it. Amir had always felt guilty about his mom's passing and that got him into writing. That can even connect to the meaning of this book. Moreover another person he cared for was Hassan. Although his actions may disagree with this, it’s clear he loves his brother very much. If Hassan had no effect on his life he wouldn’t have let his guilt consume him and he wouldn’t have taken in his kid. For example he said “ When we were children. Hassan and I…” This is how Amir decided to open his book. This shows how much he cares for Hassan and how they spent their whole lives together.

Amir wants to show the world that redemption is vital aspect for one's life. He started his life journey avoiding the past with all of his might, but now he wants to makeup for all the lost time he has, especially all the time he had lost to Hassan. After returning to Kabul he now wants to fix his actions of the past in the present, he takes Sohrab back to America so he has a better life and less suffering then if he had stayed. He was only focused on making Sohrab happy with whatever he could do “For you, a thousand times over” (371). He was willing to bend of backwards for Sohrab, he symbolized his relationship with Hassan or at least what was a relationship.

Throughout the book Amir has always had people by his side. He had his Father Baba, his half- brother Hassan, a father figure Rahim Khan. Amir grew up in a city called Kabul. Before the war happened Kabul was a very beautiful city with fun activities such as kite running. He grew up with Hassan, and they were always engaging in adventurous activities. He went to school were he enjoyed writing poetry. He was the best in the class and everyone “wanted [him] on their team”(19). But after the war things changed drastically. He was now seeing war sites and a truck carrying many immigrants became his home for awhile. Amir was now seeing brutal sites. But once he made it to America his life became “normal”. Graduating high school at the age of 20 and having kids of his own.

One of Amirs goals was to make Baba proud, he thought that if he won the kite tournament, it would be that easy. Amir’s past frames his future, every he does is based on past regrets which isn’t healthy. All Amir wanted was acceptance from his father telling him that “[He] was going to win...Then [He’d] bring it to home and show it to Baba. Show him once and for all that his son was worthy.” (60). All Amir’s actions were based off of the purpose of gaining acceptance and wanting praise from his father.
