Ciao a tutte e a tutti!
Introduce yourself by clicking on the (+) icon below and telling us a little about who you are. This course is highly participatory and we engage in a lot of conversation, so it's important to know one another. Who are you and from whence do you hail? Why are you taking this course? And finally, what sort of interaction have you had with Italian culture thus far: have you been to Italy or are you wishing to go? Are you the great grandchild twice removed of Italian-American immigrants? Have you watched a lot of spaghetti westerns like Django Unchained or The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly? Or do you just really like eggplant parmigiana? Etc. etc... I've provided an example below!

Hello! I'm Dr. Tessa Gurney. I'm an Assistant Professor of Italian Studies and the Director of the Program in Italian Studies here at High Point. I love speaking with HPU students about Italian language, literature, and culture. When I'm not on campus I'm at home in Winston Salem with my tempestuous puppy Zora and my cat Vico. I spend most every summer leading a study abroad program in Sicily, a beautiful Mediterranean island with an incredibly storied history and incredible food. My research relates to Italian theatre from the Early Modern period and the notion of the Turkish "other" as it is represented in plays from c. 1550-1650. If you get me talking about renaissance literature, medieval and renaissance manuscripts, food, animal welfare, or various ways to roast and brew coffee, I might speak for a long time...

I'm from Summerfield, North Carolina, a town about thirty minutes away, so I know all the local fun spots if you're ever bored. I am obsessed with German Shepherds and own three, a girl named Scarlett, an all black ex narcotics unit named Luke, and my puppy Trooper. My singular goal in life is to be able to travel the world. All of my family on my mothers side lives in New Zealand and has had a life full of world travel so to continue that tradition would be a dream come true. My dads side is from Palermo, Italy which is where I get my Italian from. His mother and her family fled Italy to escape the mafia that was after a cut of the family business. If you're looking for a home cooked Italian meal, away from home, let me know and I can call my Nonna

I was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, New York (yes, there are other parts of New York besides the city) but I recently moved to the Charlotte area. I am double majoring in Political Science and Education Studies, and also minoring in Italian. It's an odd combination, but I am very interested in education policy and hope to pursue a career as a policy analyst. I have been taking Italian for 8 years and I absolutely love it. My mother's family immigrated from Sicily, and my father's family are originally from Milano. I also tutor Italian at all levels, so if anyone needs some extra help or knows a friend who might need some help, feel free to reach out!

I was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania and grew up there for 18 years and am moving to Dallas, Texas in May to pursue a career in Leadership. I am a Human Relations major. I am a very small percentage Italian, but I am more Northern European, so I am really taking this class because I have always had an interest in the Italian culture. I took Italian for 6 years, I visited on a student ambassador program when I was younger, and my boyfriend's dad is an Italian wine importer and speaks Italian, so it has been fun to have someone to speak with and has refreshed my interest in the culture.

My family is pretty Italian as you can tell from my name ... and my moms maiden name is Iezzi (YET-zi). I love being Italian and my mom and I are finally getting to visit this summer and I am beyond excited to see the beautiful sights, eat lots of authentic pasta dishes, and experience the Italian way of life. (please hit me up with places we have to see!) My family has had some ties in Philly with the mafia, but that is as much as I know on that topic. I am currently trying to teach myself some Italian on the Duolingo app in my spare time since I only learned the curse words from my grandma. My great uncle speaks fluent Italian and is the author of the "Coffee with Nonna" series which details his very Italian and humorous childhood memories. I am excited to learn more about my heritage!

Both my parents speak fluent Italian so the language is spoken often in our home. I'm excited to be in this class to enhance my understanding of the Italian culture.

I am from Winston-Salem, NC - about half an hour away from HPU, as I am sure many of you are aware! Unfortunately, I cannot claim any biological connection to Italy. However, as much of my family also does, I have a deep interest in Italian culture and cuisine which has led me my family and I to spending long, enjoyable hours trying our hand at learning about, preparing (and commonly enjoying!) the rich culture and cusine of the country. As you can likely imagine, we quickly discovered - and continue to discover - just how vast and varied the influences can be throughout Italy as a result of the connections Italy has to various regions of the world. Perhaps our greatest asset in this pursuit is an older cousin of mine who speaks fluent Italian! I look forward to learning even more about the intricacies of Italy and its connectedness to other areas of the world this semester!

Because a contact zone has to do with people communicating and negotiating power relations, I think a more contemporary contact zone could be the relationship students and professors have within the classroom. The professors get to tell the students how the class will be run, what the rules will be and decide what assignments there are to complete. The students have the choice to communicate and participate with the professor inside of the classroom however they should desire. It is ultimately the professor who determines if the communication from the student is valid and deserving of a good grade or not.

While it may initially appear that the majority of people on board (the passengers) are from the same or very similar cultures, one must consider the crew onboard. As anyone who has every been on a cruise is well aware, nearly every crew member is from a different culture. Not only are the crews' interactions with one another a contact zone, but the passengers' interactions with the crew are a contact zone. Perhaps this is a
contact zone within a contact zone?

When I was in third grade, my family went skiing in Cortina and took a short trip to Venice. I was mesmerized by Italian culture and look forward to going back someday to explore other parts of the country. Last year, my family went to Florence and Tuscany without me and came back raving about the pasta... so that is definitely on my bucket list!

This melting pot contains hungry judges coming from their chambers on the top floor, defense and prosecuting attorneys with their criminal clients on trial, court support officials, family members of incarcerated individuals, children with their parents applying for passports, and more. These different groups of people all behave in different ways and sometimes do not get along in the close quarters of the dining location. There are language barriers, socioeconomic differences, and a lack of proper etiquette for some. Everyone is forced to share tables, coexist, and occasionally socialize outside their group. This is a contact zone because it is a social space with power imbalances that clash on the daily. A judge could literally be sitting next to a defendant waiting for their trial to begin.

I believe that many universities can be deemed examples of contact zones because of the multitude of cultures and citizens of countries that attend. There are many individuals who choose to attend university or graduate school in a country other than their own because the school there is ranked highly in whatever their field of study. A good example of a university that would be a contact zone is the Guildhall Graduate School at Southern Methodist University. One of their programs is extremely competitive, with only 50 spots in the overall school. Those 50 spots are filled with individuals from 10 different North American, Asian, and Middle Eastern countries. With all of these different cultures in one location, where all projects revolve around group work, students must make an effort to learn and understand how others communicate and interact best.

Mary Louise Pratt’s definition of a contact zone comes from a very deep historical background, but I agree with some of my classmates who referenced more current examples. Airports, especially international ones, are a space where all “cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other.” Going to the airport is not the most comfortable experience. Irritable people clamoring around in the TSA line, although not thrilling, drives interaction amongst people from all over the world. You are forced to think about how it may be dangerous but you can't ignore the personalities (good and bad) you meet during the whole process of flying. I don’t know how much literature you could get out of the integration that occurs at an airport, but today airline customers are quick to tweet about their experience. Social media provides historical evidence of cultures clashing in a temporary contact zone.

A successful revolution does not entirely solve all of a societys problems. This is due to many issues which could arise due to the conflict as well as the new government which is put in place. Due to the violence, the population would have had many losses as well as infrastructure and homes destroyed. For example, the Russian Revolution and Civil war was a successful revolution in overthrowing the Czar and putting in place a communist regime. There, however were issues following the successful revolution as one oppressing regime was overthrown for another oppressing regime. There was also devastation throughout the Western half of the country as cities and towns were the sites of many battles. The population was forced into a classless and anti-religious society which in turn ended up also forcing many into poverty. The new regime made each persons property also property of the state, while the government lived lavish lives of luxury. Communism hurt the working class as there would be shortages of food as well as other essentials. Within "Nedda" you could see the aftermath of revolution as the family was stricken by poverty as well as lack of medication, ultimately being the demise of the main characters.

Caroline MurphyAn example of a contact zone is New York City. Immigrants (mostly European) came to America in the late 1800s into the 1900s through Ellis Island, which is why many immigrants stayed in New York City. The fascinating thing about New York City is that It celebrates so many different cultures and types of people because of the fact that people come from all over the world to live there. It is truly a social space where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other. Even today you can visit Little Italy, Chinatown, Little Dominican, Little Sengal in Harlem and many more. The culture of New York City and America as a whole is a combonation of celebrating many different cultures.

Obviously a revolution fixes some of a society's problems, like ineffective leadership, but adds others not perviously thought of. An example that everyone faces is organizing the new government with competent leaders in a fair way, paying for the damages that the revolution caused during its time, and the extreme poverty and disease that are brought about like in Nedda. The American revolution, made the US extremely poor while the government was trying to figure its leadership out and change our currency over from the pound. Small Pox and Measles were running ramped due to poor living conditions in the war ravaged nation. People in both scenarios fell into poverty because of the lack of employment opportunities, the mass casualties of family and community members (illness or war), and the poor crop harvests.

Revolutions often provide short-term relief, but lack long-term stability. This notion is exemplified in the American Revolution. While the colonies did gain independence from the British, governance in the budding nation proved to be a hindrance for a number of years. The original solution was the Articles of Confederation, which established an inept and weak form of government. Riots ensued as a result of the Articles inadequacy, and ultimately the need arose for revision. The top political theorists at the time saw it apt that the Articles be completely done away with, and thus created the Constitution. Even the Constitution failed to solve the problem of governance in the newly sovereign nation, as it failed to enumerate significant civil liberties. This problem, however, is not unique to America, as many emerging states struggle with establishing sovereignty and recognition in the international system. Other problems can arise as was seen in "Nedda". Poverty was rampant in Sicily and the characters had to resort to a life of arduous labor just to get by.

Revolutions do not always solve all of societies problems. Problems begin to arise when figuring out who owns power which causes chaos in government and disorganization in society as a whole. Revolution also causes destruction of the town, because of war fought there, which can lead to poverty of the people who live there. In Nedda, the citizens become extremely ill with the fever and impoverished due to the destruction of crops and loss of work and money. Many people were out of work and had to travel far to get it and stay alive while dealing with illness as well.

No, a successful revolution certainly does not solve all of a society's problems. Needless to say, there are many many great benefits. However, there are also severe drawbacks and issues which arise. The lack of an experienced/well organized government, the aftermath of the violence and destruction, the lack of order and regulation, the incredible cost of staging such a revolution, the costs associated with establishing a new government, etc. A perfect example is the French revolution which ended with the storming of the Bastille. Despite the success, many lives were lost to executions in the years that followed, mass murder of those whom did not support the Revolution for many years after, European wars for many years, years of chaos due to the lack of a strong and efficient government, etc. In the reading, we see epidemics, poverty, famine, violence and destruction spread rapidly, each presumably further fueling the others both directly and indirectly.

Although a successful revolution solves a majority of a society’s problems, it does not entirely solve them. Even if a large majority is for the revolution and change, there will always be a small sum of the population who is either uncomfortable with the change and would rather not risk it, not wanting to implement the change because it could backfire, corrupt, or just simply not be what those ruling want, or completely against the change. Some issues that newly formed countries have to deal with are power struggles, power distance, freedom of speech and/or speech limitations, along with forming and funding a country and all that is in it. An example of a revolution that went well, but not phenomenal could be America’s Civil War. Once the war was won by the Union, not everything changed overnight. Sadly, there will still states and individuals who believed in slavery and that one individual was lesser than another. The issues that characters in post-revolutionary Sicily have to deal with in “Nedda” are poverty and sickness.

Even with success and a change of power, minority groups and more controversial issues tend t be left and not dealt with. Issues that newly formed countries have to deal with mainly involve economic issues, and funding for government programs, like food stamps, first responders etc.
There are a few problems that arise in the reading, Nedda. Lack of jobs have driven people to look farther away from home for work, pushing families apart in a society that stays together. Lack of food is another problem related to a lack of jobs. The last huge issue I identified was workers rights. In this time women's rights were little to none. Nedda was left with 40 soldi which is far less than what she deserved.

The reason a a revolution is started is to make a change and to overthrow whatever inexperienced/unjust leadership there is, but even if it the revolution is successful it does not solve all of societies problems. In a new society with a new government there may for example be a large portion of people for a revolution but some who are against it.Some issues that have to be dealt with are lack of government programs, and they don't really have an infrastructure. An example of this would be the American Revolution against England, they were unhappy with the British government and their control over the colonies. Although the colonies gained their independence from Britain, the governance of America was not effectively operating for years after the revolution ended. In Nedda the people became very sick and also became poor because of the destruction of their crops - which meant they could not work and therefore made no money, as well as having to deal with their illnesses.

If people are unhappy enough, it is easy to get people riled up and start a revolution. After the war ends however, it can be difficult to deliver on what was promised. When Fidel Castro led the Cuban Revolution, people were hoping to come out of it with new found independence. Unfortunately, Cuba strong enough to sustain a transition to communism and the economy remains stunted even today. In Nedda, many of the characters struggle to live in the impoverished conditions which inevitably occur after a revolution. As some of my classmates have mentioned, the astronomical cost of rebuilding often comes from the pockets of those who have the least. Regrowth is possible with the right leadership, but it is not guaranteed.

The life of an immigrant is not an easy one. Personally, I feel that one of the biggest struggles of being an immigrant would be the constant feeling of being an outsider. Whether it be a difference in language, cultural traditions, or religion, there will always be something that sets you slightly apart from others' that were born and raised in the country you immigrate to. We should of course be welcoming and respectful of these differences, but unfortunately that is not always the case. I remember my Italian teacher in high school told us a story about how shortly after she moved to America, she would get dressed up to go to the grocery store. She described the weird looks she would get from some of the other women who were wearing casual clothes/sweats. She then explained that in Italy, there is a cultural and social phenomenon known as "la bella figura". This is basically the idea that appearances really matter and you should always put in effort to present yourself in a good light. Due to this cultural difference, it took her a while to get used to the fact that she didn't always have to dress to impress whenever she ran errands.

We often times assume any outsiders are trying to impose threats on us or judge their culture/ language. They might also be treated unfairly because of these differences as well and because they are not the dominant group. They also have a completely different way of life and value different things which can make them feel excluded in our society. I think another challenge would definitely be aspects of culture that aren't as well known or foreign to us Americans, for example: refusing food in some Arab countries is considered really rude, or that tipping isn't customary in Europe and it's considered offensive in Japan. I have family friends that are from Greece and they told me when they came to America they didn't realize that a thumbs up was a positive thing, because in Greece it's considered to be the same as the American middle finger. My other family friends are from Italy, and I agree with Rachel's comment on "la bella figura," because my mom's best friend will look like a goddess with full makeup and jewelry just to go to Yoga.

The mode of travel in the early 1960s for Italians traveled by boat in steerage, cheap accommodations in the bottom of the ships, no portholes which would create for another immense experience like leaving your hometown. Some other issues once getting to America would be, living with relatives or others, the first couple weeks at school not knowing English, wearing odd clothes and getting picked on for what you are wearing or being different. The landscaping and set up is different from what they were used to liking more full roads, more significant buildings, different cultures, different foods, and not the same sports. These are just some issue immigrants would face, and the list continues, the transition was not easy at all.

If I was a new immigrant in a country I knew nothing about one of the struggles I would face could be the culture and the lifestyle. Because the values and beliefs would be different. In my opinion one of the biggest issues immigrants have nowadays is when they enter their not accepted into society in some areas. The laws can also be different than what they're used to because each country has different laws. Along with laws there are new tastes in foods. However, some can just have plain homesickness which is what I would probably get if I moved to Australia or England.

It would make tasks, such as buying a house, getting a job, finding directions, and going to school, much more difficult. You probably wouldn't know anyone and it would be hard to get to know someone if you can't speak their language. It would also be a whole new culture that you would have to adapt to. You would have to learn the culture's norms and values in order to know what is right and wrong. Overall, it would be a pretty overwhelming experience and would take a while to get used to.

For me Immigrating to a new country is probably one of the most stress-fullest task in life to ever pursue. Initially i feel as though the culture shock and language barrier would be the biggest challenge to overcome. Everything that i used to know is basically irrelevant now. I think the main struggle for me though would perhaps be the constant feeling of isolation or not truly belonging. Even though i've never traveled/immigrated to another country, Up until college all the schools that i've been to were predominantly black. Although College has been great so far, coming to High Point was kind of a complete culture shock because i never knew what it felt like to be a true minority. Diversity among people is a beautiful thing however there are a lot of people who despise sharing "their" country with outsiders. Being an Immigrant
isn't an easy calling, however having immigrants is the best way to acquire a more seasoned and flourishing community.

While animals have provided humanity with the means of nourishment for as long as we can remember, things have gotten way out of hand. Not only do animals deserve better care than the industries provide them with, but because we consume animal products in mass amounts, the industry pumps them with unsafe amounts of antibiotics and other chemicals that are harmful to the human body!
-We need to not purchase cosmetic and household products that have been tested on animals (choosing cruelty-free products instead)
-We need to not wear or use clothes, shoes or furnishings made with the skins, hairs or feathers of animals (fur, wool etc)
-We should not attend/fund entertainment circuses, zoos etc because animals belong in their own habitat with other members of their species and are not meant to be used for human entertainment and profit
-Lastly, we should not eat foods that come from animals as this only promotes animal cruelty and antibiotic use, which we will all become intolerant to eventually.

This is because the games are to late to watch if you have a 7:50. So I move to change this atrocity.
-Firstly the sports channels need to free up some space, so they can get rid of the motor cross and figure skating that is commonly brings in low rating and lets be honest only like 1/10 people watch those
- Then networks and stadium workers need to set up the stadium and have concessions and pro shop open earlier, this should have no real big effect since they already do that.
- The stadium will want to make sales on these earlier games since people will be coming at a time they are not use to
-Lastly players will get ready earlier, which again not terribly different then it would be before.
These steps wont make huge waves negatively but the payoff would be huge with increased ratings

Listen up United States! The quality and regulations of our food are terrible compared to other developed countries. It is such a big issue that it plays a big factor in the obesity epidemic as well as contributing to many of the health issues Americans face today. Basic food staples that have been around for centuries, that used to provide nutrition, are now making us sick. With all of the processing and added GMO's and chemicals, food is nothing like it used to be.
- First, bread, a staple of the human diet for over a thousand years. Bread used to provide humans with the nutrition they needed to live. Due to the processing of flour and use of instant yeast, compared to the traditional way of breadmaking that took days, bread has lost its nutritional value. They way we process flour removes all of the nutrients and the use of instant yeast has contributed to the gluten-free pandemic of todays day and age. We should regress back to the traditional way of making bread, using unprocessed flour, to regain he nutrition that we once found in bread.
- Second, we should stop using harmful chemicals on our produce and stop pumping our food full of GMO's. The more natural, the better. Healthier options should not cost more than the unhealthy ones. This will promote better health among the lower class, who typically are the ones who face health issues, due to the high cost of healthier options.
- Third, America should be producing less processed food. The marketing of processed food gained popularity after WWII when there was a surplus of the processed foods used to send to soldiers overseas. They wanted to find a way to get rid of it so they marketed to the American population as a way of saving time and energy in the kitchen. Since processed foods began being available to the U.S. population, our health has rapidly declined.
- Fourth our country still allows a long list of harmful chemicals to be put in our food, that most other countries have banned. Harmful chemicals should not be allowed in food in any quantity.

My fellow Americans, I humbly ask that you approach the following without the looming presence of your partisanship. Whether you're coming from the left or the right, it is time we meet in the middle. I seek neither to paint this wonderful republic red, nor blue, but aim to keep all of America's colors vivid and alive. However, I fear that America the beautiful is fading to gray. The culprit is not Donald Trump, nor is it China. Rather, complacency is the silent killer of what we hold in our hearts to be the land of the free and home of the brave. We the people have become complacent. Our representatives have fallen victim as well. We must realign our priorities as a nation to ensure the continued greatness of our beloved country.
-The first action that must be taken is in the addressing of the national debt. Our country is currently $22.1 trillion (yes, trillion with a 't') in debt. I'm not sure whether it is more alarming that it has gotten to be that high, or that no one is speaking out about it. For those of you reading this and thinking it doesn't affect you, I can assure you that it most certainly does because our generation will be left with the tab at the end of the night. If we continue down this dangerous fiscal path, we will be the cause of our decline as a global hegemon.
-Secondly, the overwhelming presence and influence money has on politics in this country must cease. Money may not be able to buy happiness, but it can buy seats in Congress. Candidates running well-funded campaigns win elections. In turn, preferential legislation is drafted to demonstrate a positive return on their generous benefactors investment. The presence of money in politics has dominated our voting system as well. Nine out of ten people with incomes $75,000 or more vote, whereas only five in ten people with incomes $15,000 or less show up at the polls. This disparity occurs because less advantaged Americans lack the skills, motivation, and networks that their more advantaged counterparts have through formal education and occupational advancements. Representatives address the issues of their constituents, so when their primary voting members are wealthy, they take their issues to the Hill while the less affluent, nonvoters are left behind.
-Lastly, I implore that we stop looking at the U.S. Constitution through rose-colored glasses. While it is a miraculous document that should be revered, it should not be an untouchable shrine to the American government. The framers intended for it to be a living document, and would in fact be greatly disturbed by our reluctance to amend it. We are an advanced, modern society operating within the confines of the 18th century. The government is operating far outside what is enumerated in the Constitution. Executive privilege is not listed anywhere in the Constitution, nor does it determine how many members should be on the Supreme Court. This undermining of the Constitution is dangerous because what's to say that the government won't begin creating powers that hurt the American people more than they help?

There comes an age where children are mature and old enough to understand hard realities. However, Joshua was at an age where I feel it was extremely appropriate and especially moving that Guido went to such measures to protect his sons innocence and attempt to keep him happy for as long as possible. Guido was trying to keep him safe from the reality of their situation. In fact, it is arguable that Joshua knowing about their reality and being scared of said reality, would have put him in greater danger of being discovered/killed. The "game" allowed Guido to more easily hide and keep a small child such as Joshua calm and protected, which ultimately resulted in saving his life. Guido truly gave his son the ultimate sacrifice and was absolutely correct in shielding him from his own realities.

Given how young and innocent that Joshua was at the time, I feel that Guido was correct to shelter him form such harsh realties and fear by describing the situation as a "game." That being said, I hope that Joshua's mother will one day reveal the realities of the situation when Joshua is mature enough so that he will understand the gravity of the situation that he was in and why events such as the Holocaust cannot be allowed to occur. While Guido's approach occasionally seemed too light hearted and/or (nearly) endangered others, the approach certainly worked in the end and spared Joshua's life so that (hopefully) he may share his story and help prevent such travesties from ever occurring again. Generally, I feel that the approach Guido used - assuming that Joshua learns and understands the reality as soon as he is mature enough - is a very effective parenting style which allows the enjoyment of childhood but also ensures a firm grasp on reality.

I believe that a child should maintain their innocence until they are old enough to handle the harsh reality of the world. I think Guido telling his son that it was all a game was beneficial because it made the severity of the situation less for him and he most likely was able to listen to the *rules of the game” better than a strict direction to stay put, subsequently saving his life. I would personally do anything to keep my child safe in the short term, and then explain what really happened and how awful life can be when he is able to comprehend and contemplate what it means for their future.

By telling him it was a "game" it kept him happy and calm, not looking for the bad things that were occurring. Not telling his son, took away the scared little boy that could have ended up getting hurt if he did not hide. However, if the little boy was older than I think it would have been smart to tell him because then he would have the opportunity to figure things out if he was put in a bad situation. Every child should have the choice to remain thinking good thoughts until the age they can handle certain events. Therefore Guido was trying to protect his child and make the best out of the things happening.

However, I believe that Guido shouldn't hide the truth of the events to his son because how important it is to make horrific events like these known and aware, so things like this never happen again. Due to the age of his son, it could be tough telling him the truth because of the way he could respond to it. I do not dislike like the decision Guido made telling him it was a game because he wants to protect his son and make sure no harm or fear comes to him.

He could have explained to his son what was actually happening, but he chose to go out of his way to uphold the perception that it was game. Even if Guido chose to explain the situation to his son, there's a large chance that he wouldn't be able to comprehend the complexity of the situation at hand. He is so young and innocent and I believe that a child's innocence should be protected at all costs. As his son grows older, it would definitely be worth telling him the truth about the world they live in because they should not have unrealistic expectations.

I admire how strong Guido was in the process. It is right that if something were to happen to the boy then at least he was happy until the last moment. My parents were always very honest with my about things. Taking me to wakes and funerals, teaching me about horrible events of the past, and exposing me to every part of society as well as different parts of the world so that I could draw my own conclusions. Although I think this may have lead me to be a bit cynical at times, I am grateful to have that many more experiences under my belt because life doesn't necessarily get easier as you move on through it. I will say that my parents were fantastic at highlighting the silver linings in every situation they could and I carry that positivity with me when facing unpleasant situations. I respect Guido for trying to maintain some sense of hope - if not for him, then at least for his son. I think that in this case, the worst thing that could happen would be for Guido's son to die, so I understand why he would want to protect every last moment of his son's happiness.

Italy is becoming more involved by joining the surrounding areas and seeing their views on things. Like immigrating to new places for example could be both positive and negative. Positive it could intertwine their ways and beliefs. Or negative it could start arguments or disruption between the countries.

The differences that have occurred from migration have connected the world through its disagreements and solutions. Many doors have opened to various concepts, ideas, and historical information through immigration and what it has brought to the world, specifically Italy.
