Lincoln was born into poverty on February 12, 1809. So he didn't have a proper education, so he was mostly self-taught, but when he moved to Indiana at age seven, he went to a school where he became an avid reader who loved to learn. As a teenager, his father, Thomas Lincoln, heavily relied on him for farm work and getting/creating a decent income. "When he was somewhat older, Lincoln and some friends took a job carrying goods by flatboat to New Orleans, Louisiana, where the slave markets, according to the historian Michael Burlingame, "would leave an indelible impression on him.... It was the first time, but not the last, that he would be repelled while observing slavery firsthand."

" President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared 'that all persons held as slaves' within the rebellious states 'are, and henceforward shall be free.' "(The National Archives) The Emancipation Proclamation was a declaration that turned the Civil War upside down in a way, but sadly, it was very limited in many ways, because it only worked in states that had seceded from the United States, which meant it left some slavery untouched. Also, the parts of the southern territory that the North had taken. Also, this declaration heavily relied on them winning the war.
