Ocean Surface Currents

The ocean currents are a large current system. They help cold water travel to the equator and warm water travel to the poles. This large current system causes the turtles to be directed in different ways, Some toward fishing nets depending on the strength and direction. A strong surface current could cause a turtle to get caught in a net with little to no chance of survival. Depending on the current, the net could become wrapped around the turtle slowly killing it. When up welling occurs, fish and turtles are much more likely to be caught by accident by fishing nets. This benefits fisherman, because more fish come to the surface, but it can increase by-fishing immensely.

The continental margin is a part of the ocean floor that separates the thin oceanic crust from the thick oceanic crust. The closer to the shore that fisherman are fishing, the closer the sea turtles come to the shore because they are following their food source.

Deep Ocean Currents

Deep ocean currents are caused by high temperatures and high salinity. The conveyor belt structure of currents is absolutely crucial to the marine food chain. As the deep currents move water, they enrich carbon dioxide-poor, nutrient-depleted surface waters. The nutrients and carbon dioxide from the bottom layers that are passed through the upper layers allow for algae and seaweed to grow. The sea turtle predominantly eats seaweed and algae, so the deep ocean currents will make or break the turtles food chain.

THE SOLUTION

Fisherman can be completely unaware of turtles, until its far to late and they are swept up onto boats. I order to stop this, we have come up with a solution that will warn fisherman and possibly prevent by-catching. Fisherman will connect underwater cameras to their fishing nets so they are able to see who comes in and who comes out. Nets will also have weight senors throughout them, by law. Turtles are heavy and will be easily contrasted to commercial fish by their weight. These cameras and sensors must be checked every half an hour, the cameras can be checked on the app we developed called "For The Turtles" that notifies fisherman. If a fisherman is notified of a turtle that has become stuck in one of their nets they must immediately, by law, go and free them. Creating state of the art weight sensors will not only provide for a safer hunting ground for turtles, but also help the species that is already increasingly endangered.

Almost all seven species of sea turtles could be classified as endangered. This issue is due to to to human activity. Turtles can become accidentally captured by fishing nets/gear. Almost all the turtles captured are killed by this kind of occurrence. Sea turtles are killed because of their eggs, meat, skin, and also shells. Sea turtles also suffer from poaching and over exploitation. Climate change harshly impacts sea turtles nesting spots, meaning this can effect where lay their eggs as well as what beaches.
