Wilma Rudolph grew up in the town of Clarksville, Tennessee She was often sick when she was a child. When she was four years old she caught POLIO. Polio is a virus that attacks the brain and the spinal cord. It causes high fever and sometimes paralysis (loss of movement). Polio damaged the nerves and muscles in Wilma's left leg. Her doctors worried that she might never walk AGAIN. Wilma wore a heavy metal brace on her leg for many years. Her mother and sister rub her leg every day to make more blood flow to the muscles. One day each week, Wilma and her mother took a bus to Nashville they went to a city hospital and Wilma learned exercises to strengthen her left leg.
