Her heroic work started in 1939, when Hitler and his Nazis constructed the Warsaw Ghetto. An estimated 450,000 Polish Jews were forcefully placed there for execution. Irena rebelled against this injustice and joined the holocaust resistance. Her first step was joining the Children’s Division of Zegota, which was a group that meant to help Jewish youth from execution. After joining the division, she then planned to get into the Warsaw Ghetto. Since the Nazis thought that all Jews were “disease carriers” Irena wanted to earn a pass from Warsaw’s Epidemic Control Department to get inside. Luckily, she was given affirmation. Irena would visit the Jews in Warsaw regularly, checking on them and bringing them necessary supplies. Since Irena was so close to the Jews, she secretly took Jewish children (with parent's permission) and helped them escape through an old courthouse in Warsaw. Unfortunately, the Nazis found out about the Children’s Division of Zegota, and the German official who interrogated Irena wanted all their names. Little did he know, the division expected something like this to occur and Irena gave him false names and locations. After that they let her go, only for them to realize that she was part of Zegota. Eventually Irena kept pushing her efforts until the end of the holocaust, she saved up to 2,500 Jewish lives.

Through it all, Irena lived her life until the age of 98. Her legacy lived on in the Jewish community and inspired others to speak up against injustice. A professor at Clark University recalls Irena as “an inspiration and the prime mover for the whole network that saved 2,500 Jewish children”. The impact of Irena’s heroic work saved not only the existing Jews, but their future generations. In 1965, Irena was honored for her valor and compassion. Today, her legacy lives in holocaust memorials and museums across countries.

On October 20th, 1943 the Nazis found out about Irena's work in saving the Jews. She was imprisoned, tortured and beaten. Though what she went through, it did not break her spirit, she would not speak a word of where the Jewish children or her associates were. She was sentenced to death for not speaking, but then was saved right before execution when the Zegota members bribed on of the Germans to let her live. She then escaped prison and over the course of four years, she saved many more Jewish people.
