This post hits home for me. There is a tremendous amount of pressure put on student athletes. You go to school, practice, work, spend time with family and friends, and somehow are supposed to find time for yourself? Yeah right! Through my time in undergrad, I became comfortable with the feeling that my life was in shambles. There wasn't enough hours in the day to please everyone, excel in every assignment, and make it to every social event. I loved being a student athlete, but it honestly took a major toll on my mental health. You are in a balancing act everyday and sometimes life leans a little to far and everything crashes and burns. The NCAA is doing a good job of promoting mental health, but student athletes still do not fully take it seriously. I never did because I did not have one hour to attend a seminar between class, practice, and life. Universities need to do a better job of blocking time out in the day for people to take a step back and evaluate their mental health status. Swimming is a terrible sport for mental health, there is no team aspect. It is you vs the clock. You know the times a year in advance that you have to go in order to make it to the next level. They HAUNT you, you think about them all day long, every day. The focus of this article of it is okay to not be okay is amazing. I learned this after my sophomore year, a year that was the hardest of my life. Nothing is going to be perfect but as long as you try your best, and have a good attitude, good things are soon to come. Great post, I could talk all day about this. Thank you for sharing
