A rise in popularity of nationalism began after the French Revolution. People all over France felt more united than previously. They began viewing themselves as noble people who fight for their homeland. This was also due to implementation of a document from the National Assembly that highlighted the fact that people were entitled to certain rights, having been born in France.

Due to the chaos that was occurring in France because of social and economic instability, the Estates General decided to meet to come up with solutions. However, the third estate, which consisted of commoners, felt ignored by the other two estates and decided to break away from them. They created a brand new assembly with the purpose of making actual change in terms of rights in France. They, however, ended up killing a lot of people just because they considered them to have the potential to go against the revolution.

King Louis had huge financial problems because he had to pay military ventures and the support of the colonists in the American Revolution. All these things almost lead France to go bankrupt. King Louis set reforms to resolve the economic problems but it just made things worse. This meant that peasants had to pay higher taxes more than they already did and rising consumer prices, but the rich were protected from new taxes because of their exemptions and traditional rights.
