Some things that I think are important was when Andy recalled one of his favorite childhood moments. He talked about catching crickets. I think this is important as this shows what he did back in Vietnam as this showed the difference between what we do for fun in the modern world compared to what Andy did back then. Another thing that I think that was important was when he was stranded on a boat for 10 days and didn't know where he was going. This was important as this was a conflict and they may have not survived. Luckily, they found a island where they got shelter and food and survived. Another thing that stood out was when Andy and Minh told us some advice for us. They told us things to be grateful and be thankful for our family. As this truly stood out and was important advice for me and the other 6th graders.

After that they went to the main island where all the other vietnamese people lived. the main land was more crowded then the previous island. they were gifted money for beds.

I remember that Dennis' grandpa said he was doing a test while dodging bullets. He also got captured and he decided to sleep right next to the bathroom but later on the bathroom started to stink so that wasn't a good place to sleep. He was also forced to join the military for 12 months and he also got paid. He had a feeling during the war where he was with his team he would have to leave because they would get ambushed if they stayed there for longer. His family couldn't all go so his entire cussed at the guard to let them go to America and the guard had enough so he let them go.

One thing that I heard Andy say was when they were talking about being stranded on a boat for 10 days with barely any food or water. There were some random people in the sea that gave them a bit of water and food and they didn't even know where they were going because they didn't bring a compass so there was about 20+ people on a small boat and when it was the last day. Andy and his family felt like they were going to die but then someone spotted a random island. If there wasn't anybody on the island everybody on the boat would die from starvation and dehydration but they were lucky enough to find some Indonesian people on the island and they gave Andy and his family food and water and brand new cloths and everything they needed and so they stayed over there for a couple days. But there were some unlucky people who found a island with no food and water and those people sadly died but Andy was very lucky.

I remember when the veteran was talking about how he lived on the mountains most of the time growing up. He said that he had to dodge bullets while doing the exam. He also talked about how his family came to America, and the HO program. On the other hand, Andy's family and friends came to America by a 10 meters boat, they were stranded on the boat for 10 days, fortunately, they found an island in the most critical situation. And the thing that I noticed that both veterans mentioned is how the communist treat them back then. Lastly, today's activity is really meaningful to me since my grandparents had also faced the same situation.

That is different then how we have fun nowadays; we have fun playing devices. It teaches us to be grateful we didn't have to play with crickets to waste time. We should be grateful that our relatives worked hard to give us a life that they never had.

And Minh told us about him living in the mountains because he escaped Vietnam from the war who fought and he left Vietnam and moved to the mountains while cannon. He couldn´t have a teacher at school to learn, so he figured this out by himself. When there is no teacher at school he tries to work hard when theirs no teacher and they felt poor without a teacher.

They have to equal each other to not flip the boat if they didn't equal each other the boat would flip and they will drown. And they survived with Andy's mom rice they eat a little and save some for later. they came across a big ship and started helping them by giving them water but they put the water In a plastic bag but it kept popping. kept popping until they gave up. the 10th day they found a island that was part of Indonesia when they arrived in the island the villagers thought they were aliens because no Vietnamese refugees have come to the island. The villagers gave them food and water and a place to stay at a hunt.

Something that stood out to me was how Andy, Minh, and Paula described life in Vietnam. It made me feel so fortunate and grateful that I didn't have to go through what they did. I heard about the lack of education, food, and resources in Vietnam during the war which made me realize how lucky we really are to be living here without the harsh circumstances they were in. Hearing about how Minh dodged bullets while doing an exam and having weapons pointed at Paula and Andy was so shocking since I've never truly experienced seeing people who went through such hardships to get where we are.

During the exam there was a war going on against Cambodia so he had to doge the bullets during the exam, also when he was our age French was going against Vietnam so during his time it was very hard. Also some people from the U.S.A came to vietnam to help people escape and they has to fill out a form but only people over 20 can go. SO he told us that if he doesn't let his whole family go they would curse at him every day.

Andy Nolan's Grandpa told us that people were taking over vietnam. So if people tried to leave Vietnam they would bring them to jail. HE told us that they went on a big boat and went to sea and their was about 28 people on that boat, 20 of them being family and 8 of them being neighbours, went they went to sea they almost died, during the trip they spotted a pirate ship but they did not hurt them but gave them food.

Something I noticed in the interview of both Minh (Dennis's grandpa) and both Lorelai's great aunt and her grandpa (Andy) was how they fought their freedom to travel to America. For Minh, he had applied a TPG paper to travel back to America with its family. However, the officer told Minh only his kids above 20 years old are allowed to go to America. Minh threatens that all nine of his kids are going to curse at him until they are allowed to safely travel to America and after some hours, the cop allows them to go. Andy was way more different however, Andy had to work for countless days and save money and the family to save a 9 meter boat to escape the horrible place they lived. Andy and their aunt traveled for a total of ten days to get to an island. However, the journey wasn't safely good. A total of twenty-eight people, twenty-two families and eight neighbors.

Minh, Dennis's grandpa had an inspiring story. He was taking a test in a room while dogging bullets from people out in the war. I can't even imagine how difficult that was, taking such a important test is already difficult itself but dogging bullets is like a fever dream. Andy's story also caught my attention as it relates to my family's story. He endured so much in one lifetime that many others would never. We as students are extremely fortunate to be able to not experience anything like this.

The determination of Andy and Minh during their escapes from Vietnam is remarkable. Andy recounted spending ten days on a small boat, seeking refuge from the war, while Minh described the desperate moment he and his nine children cursed at a police officer in their urgency to flee. Their stories reflect incredible resilience and the lengths individuals will go to protect their families, embodying the struggle and hope inherent in the human experience during conflict.

Both Andy (Lorelai's and Nolan's Grandpa) and Minh (Denis's Grandpa) have come along the way. They had been through a lot. The way Minh had to live in the mountains because his family didn't want to reveal his identity. Minh didn't have a proper dinner with all of his family which stand out for me the most. For Andy, he also has been through a lot. From sailing a boat with over 20 people and nearly starving from death. Through gratitude, I'm surely both of them are grateful to be in America right now. If they've stayed, their lives would be worse. Something that also stand out for me is when Minh got approved to go to the United States, but most of his children couldn't go because they had to be over 20 years old. This led to all nine of his children and him cursing at the police officer to flee to the United States. In all, we should be grateful for our lives because people like Minh and Andy had been through a rough life. Both Minh and Andy said we should be grateful for our education right now and having a great, peaceful life.

For me, it was interesting that Andy, Lorelai and Nolan's grandpa, was tricked into staying at the shore of Malaysia (if i can remember) for a whole day thinking that they would get into a refugee camp and get somewhere to stay. Well, I guess not. The people instead the next day took a gun and pointed it to their family and friends, threatening that if they don't shoo, or go away, that they might face some serious consequences. In my opinion, I think that it was very rude. They just teased the family+neighbors and made them wait for something they need as a necessity. Pointing a gun at them is not an appropriate action. Instead, they could have just told them to leave respectfully and not threaten them. After that though, when arriving to a little island of Indonesia, they got treated well. The people there were apparently nice and allowed them to stay and gave them the necessities that were needed before they head their way to America. Now they can live peacefully here with freedom and no violent war going on ( I think...) Thank you Minh and Andy for sharing your stories and I hope you stay healthy and have a happy life.

Listening to Andy's boat trip to Malaysia was an incredible experience. The fact that Andy's family and several neighbors survived 10 days, some days with no food and water at all. The determination and perseverance that Andy's family and other neighbors had to leave Vietnam to find a better life in the U.S. Then, coming across Malaysia where the people there were very kind, served Andy's family and the other people food and water, gave them some money to make bunk beds to sleep in. And like Nolan's aunt said, they made them shower twice a day. In the end, a person (i forgot who) took them to the main island where the refugee camp was held and thousands of Vietnamese people where seen. The 10 day boat trip must've been hard but they were very fortunate to find Malaysia where again, gave them food and water, and not find a deserted island. :)

Each moment during the interview was outstanding to me. The hardship and sacrifice Andy and Minh experienced is unforgettable. Highlighting the parts when Andy and Minh expressed their struggles was heart touching. Minh wasn't able to have a proper meal and family time. With the responsibility of 8 children and a forced divorce, I can say that Minh certainly had a tough time. Meanwhile Andy was working hard every day engineering and working with the Air force. With lack of resources, Andy still fought through it. When Andy decided to escape Vietnam, he and his family traveled on a ten meter boat with more than 20 people on board the crowded area and absence of food and heath care, the journey of extremely heart racing. Luckily Andy and his family successfully survived the ride. Overall, what stood out most to me was the facts how Andy and Minh always cared for their family in the hardest times. They always stocked together without leaving anyone behind. The love and care pushed Andy and Minh to fight for a better future.

Andy on the other hand had to work for money to buy the 9 meter boat for people and his family to just get out. They had to travel for 10 days and they almost died. Their stories were sad and they faced so much pain when they were young and in their 30s or 40s. Minh took a test and his test was a deley due to the people bribing money to get their paperwork to go first. Minh and his family had to cuss the officer out to let his whole family go to a safe place and it only took 1 day. Paula explained that she was so sick that she didn't even want to eat or drink due to the motion sickness. I was amazed to see how Minh dodged bullets while taking the test. Andy and the other 27 people found indonesia and they got food and water and could stay there for a few days and live in a huge warehouse. I feel grateful to the veterans that fought for us. Andy had to sail with 28 people to get to an island for 10 whole days. Andy and the 27 people almost starved but thanks to the pirate ship, they survived. The way Andy and Minh both kept their family safe is what they have in common. I feel grateful for the veterans who fought for us and the sacrifice they made which led to peace today. Through gratitude, I feel appreciation for you guys and thank you for fighting for us.

But they were stranded at sea for 10 days. I can't even last 5 minutes. I am so very amazed by their tenacity and perseverance to get to America. I also realize through all of these stories we should be so grateful to be born and raised in the U.S.A.

Denis's Grandpa/Minh's backstory is like a fairytale. Growing up he faced three wars and he had to move to a mountain with his wife because of all of the horrible actions the French decided to do. Also when the officer denied his kid's who were under twenty but Minh didn't give up and swore that he would curse at the officer with his 9 children family every hour. It was courageous and funny at the same time. Again, Minh's speech felt like a fairytale in a book. I never felt such heartbreaking and funny words out of a person in my life.

In my opinion, it stood out to me how Andy had to go through all those rough obstacles including having to share a small amount of rice and a small supply of rain water to somehow manage to survive on the boat. Because Andy's family and the other people on the boat had to find a way to get more food to survive, they luckily came across a pirate ship giving them food and water, but the food and water only lasted the boat a small amount of time since there was 28 people on it. Soon, another ship came, but it was a cargo ship this time, so they couldn't really come close or else their boat would flip over. The cargo ship tried to give Andy's boat some water, but let's just say that the attempt didn't really work out. I found this fact interesting because it showed me how Andy was so desired to go to the U.S.A to survive and escape the war and to give him and his family freedom and justice and how he was so brave to take any risks to help his family and the other people on the boat.

I was truly amazed by the stories that were shared by Andy and Minh.

Something about Minh that stood out to me was when he had to hide in the mountains to hide from the soldiers. The soldiers were looking for Vietnamese people to shoot, so because Minh didn't want to reveal himself he hid the cave and had his food brought to him while he was in the cave.

Something that stood out to me in Andy's interview was when Malaysia convinced him that they wanted to help them, but instead, in the morning they pointed a gun at the people in the boat and told them to go away. But soon after the boat found the small Indonesian island where the indonesian people were being kind and providing the Vietnamese people's needs before shipping them to the main island of Indonesia.

It also resonated with me when Andy and Minh were talking about gratitude. Andy mentioned how because we have freedom and live in a non-communist country, we should be grateful. Where as Minh talked about how we should be grateful for our parents because many leave once they become an adult.

With so many people aboard, including his family, they desperately needed more food. Fortunately, they came across a pirate ship that provided them with some supplies, but those quickly ran out, given there were 28 people to feed. Not long after, a cargo ship appeared, but it was too large to get close without risking their boat capsizing. Although the cargo ship tried to send over water, their efforts ended up being unsuccessful.

Even though the aunt got sick she still made it through the 10 days in the ocean fighting the sea sickness. Soon they came to an island with very friendly people and they got very lucky because in other areas, they would be killed. They got lucky to find an island with very nice people. They were given food, water, and a hut to stay in. They also received bags of clean clothes. He had to pass an exam and during the exam he had to dodge bullets. Minh had many responsibilities, at the time he had 8 children. With the situation that was happening he was really scared he was gonna lose one of his children. he forced to file a divorce, he went through so much.

(Lorelai's & Nolan's Grandpa )

know this andy's story, when escaping from Vietnam he was sailing a boat with about 20 people. with no water , and especially no food. but luckily they found a island, they was a clan and they were so generous to give them food, water, and clothes. Paula explained her part of the story and it was so sad because the whole boat ride she was severly sick. she had more than 50 % of death, with the lack of food and water.

Some thoughts and ideas that stood out to me the most from the interview is how Dennis's grandpa got his education. It was very hard and complicated back then, and I was very surprised, flabbergasted, shocked, amazed, perplexed, astonished, startled and stupefied as Minh told his story. He had to dodge bullets while taking his exam. Not only does he have the stress of thinking about if his answer is right and other stuff, he had to worry about surviving this exam. This was important to me because it shows the difference between the safety we have now and the safety back then and the fact that Minh was really determined to get more education, even facing through harsh experiences.

In addition, Andy and Minh spoke to us on how we should be grateful for what we have. This is especially important because we all know that we are lucky to be born in this generation. We can gain education so easily, we have modern technology, etc. This was the most important thing in the interview to me. I feel really grateful to be in this generation, and so should other students in Murdy too.

Along with those thoughts, the fact that Andy, Paula, and other people survived on a boat for 10 days with no resources was incredible to me. Their determination was inspiring to me. I deeply enjoyed their time at our school.

Like when the cop/person said that he can't bring any of his kids who were under 20 he wouldnt leave his kids there and take only the kids over 20 but he stayed and kept yelling at the cop/person untill they let him and his kids on the boat and the time he was scared of losing his kids on the boat he tied a rope on all of them so he wouldn't lose them. This shows me that he really cares about his kids and would do anything for them.

At the last day someone on the boat out of 28 people saw a island far away and the island was only a couple hours away. When they got on the island the people were very nice and saw her conditions, they gave her food and water to survive because she was on the urge of passing out.

To be able to survive 10 days, on a small boat with many people on it, with little food and fresh water to share among everyone, is both impressive and courageous. After all, Andy's family had been able to survive a whole lot of that, trying to escape from Viet Nam during the war as a refugee. On the rather small sized boat, the troubled family encountered a pirate ship that fortunately gave them food and water, as they were low on those two needs. To then later meet a cargo ship, and have them try to give them nothing. But really, they were really fortunate when they landed on an island with nice people giving them things.

Her sickness was bad to the point where she couldn't move the whole 10 days. Ms. Paula wasn't able to eat because she would throw up every time she tried to eat. After a few days of endlessly sailing, they finally landed on one of Indonesia's islands. When they had landed, the island's people had come up to their family and started to ask the questions in Indonesian questions which they hadn't understood. The islanders had given them food and water. And also made them shower twice a day.. After that, the islanders had them brought to the main island to fill out paperwork to finally end up in America. I feel as if the family was strong and courageous to even step foot out of Vietnam during the time that the communists that were there at the time. The struggle of leaving home and their lives to live in an unknown place is a difficult struggle to get in your mind. The struggles that the family has gone through to get here is a difficult matter. But now, in America, they can live happy and peaceful lives.
