I chose this image because it is showing women having more Independence in a growing industrial nation. Referring to American Yawp In the 1920's woman were granted the rights to vote and also began working within more jobs, driving themselves and children around independently and being more care free "flapper image". The image is showing woman walking with their children alone and within the city. Women rights and independence played an important and huge role during this era.
Carl Gustaf Nelson, Central Park, 1934

During the 1920's the depression had long lasting effects on the economy. While reading through American Yawp I learned that the unemployment rate was 25%. The PWAP provided income for many individuals who were not able to work else where. I feel this was beneficial to creating more jobs for the families who needed them. Spending money on the artwork and culture created multiple job opportunities that were not available before and also had an outstanding impact on our culture at that time. Art shows expression during that era which I feel is important and not a wast of money.

This piece is Tenement Flats by Millard Sheets. I choose this picture because it seems like this represents the great depression life. In the life of people in this time housing and resources were scarce and running low. Many families and people had to live together and this picture shows people working together. In the American Yawp it talks about life and how people were losing money and everything for about ten to fifteen years.

Machinery abstract #2 by Paul Kelpe. I chose this piece because it represents the industrialization of american culture at the time. during this time period the economy started to boom, people moved into cities more from the country, and the fabric of the mechanistic capitalist society that is today's America began to take shape. I think this represents the working man's struggle during this era.

According to the american YAWP chapter 23 section 7 through 15. many blue collar workers praised Franklin D. Roosevelt as a protector of workers rights establishing a federally enforced minimum wage in the second part of the new deal. I think that this statement is going against the American YAWP by saying that the money wasn't used to do all those things, especially economic stimulus. While associations such as the WPA did fund things like art for cities, they also funded large infrastructure projects, housing projects, schools, libraries, and helped unemployed men and women find work.

I picked this painting because I think it describes a lot of how the American people were feeling during the great depression and new deal age. With unemployment being as low as one fourth of the population during this desperate time, people were just trying to keep a afloat. The masses took to crowded living spaces and uncomfortable lifestyles to make it through the decade. I believe this photo describes that idea well.

FDR's new deal plan was designed to be a relief for every section of the U.S. economy. The New Deal program was designed to revive the U.S. economy and I don't understand how you could do that by not funding a whole section of the economy. Art although it could be considered unneeded, is still a huge part of the American economy. The WPA's goal was to get as many people as possible back to work and it would be hard to do that it you didn't put funds into every part of the US economy.
